Vellerot-lès-Vercel is a French commune with a population of 67 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Vellerot-lès-Vercel lies at 625 m above sea level, 14 kilometers south-southeast of Baume-les-Dames and about 32 kilometers east of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a hollow on the high plateau of Villers east of the Orsans basin.
The 4.57 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the plateau of Villers, which is an average of 650 m. It consists of arable and meadow land and falls to the north to the hollow of Landresse and to the west to the Orsans basin. The high plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. At 703 m, on a hill east of the village, the highest point of Vellerot-lès-Vercel is reached.
Neighboring municipalities of Vellerot-lès-Vercel are Courtetain-et-Salans and Landresse in the north, Villers-la-Combe in the east, Villers-Chief in the south and Bremondans and Orsans in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Vellerot-lès-Vercel belonged to the Passavant estate, which had belonged to the lords of Montbéliard since the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Vellerot-lès-Vercel is a member of the Portes du Haut-Doubs municipal association .
On January 1, 2009, the arrondissement membership of the municipality was changed. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Vellerot-lès-Vercel was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector there are almost no jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp to Vellevans . Another road connection exists with Villers-la-Combe.
