View of Bonnevaux

Bonnevaux is a French municipality with 385 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Bonnevaux is 845  m above sea level, about 17 kilometers southwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the southern edge of the wide high plateau of Arlier (Pontarlier-Frasne), on both sides of the Drugeon , at the foot of the heights of Bonnevaux.

The area of the 16.53 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The northern part of the area is occupied by the high plateau of Arlier, which averages 840 m. It is partly covered by meadows, but also shows larger moor and forest areas. The area is drained by the Drugeon, which emerges here from the Cluse des Oïes and draws a sharp arc to the northeast, to the Doubs . The Drugeon used to meander through the moorland, but today it is largely canalized. In the northwest, the municipal soil extends to the shore of the moor lake Étang de Frasne , in the northeast to the shore of Lac de l'Entonnoir . To the east, the municipal area extends over a foothill of the Montagne du Laveron (up to 1030 m) and into the Klustal of the upper Drugeon (Cluse des Oïes). The densely wooded heights of Bonnevaux, southeast of the village, which geologically and tectonically form an anticline of the Jura folds , also belongs to the municipality. Here, at 1097 m, the highest point in Bonnevaux is reached.

Neighboring municipalities of Bonnevaux are Frasne and Bouverans in the north, Vaux-et-Chantegrue in the southeast, Mignovillard in the southwest and Bief-du-Fourg in the west.

history

The village is mentioned in the Middle Ages under the Latinized name Bona vallis (good valley). In the Middle Ages, Bonnevaux was part of the La Rivière lordship, which was subordinate to the Lords of Chalon. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since 2003 Bonnevaux has been a member of the communal association Communauté de communes du Plateau de Frasne et du Val du Drugeon, which comprises 10 localities .

Attractions

The château is a mansion from the 18th century and is now used as a holiday colony. Various traditional Haut-Doubs farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center, including the Pastorale , which houses a local museum.

population

With 385 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Bonnevaux is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had declined markedly in the first half of the 20th century (403 people were still counted in 1896), slight population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Bonnevaux was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture, especially dairy farming and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some small businesses, including a sawmill. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

As a resort in a popular excursion area in the High Jura, Bonnevaux now also benefits from tourism. The municipality is mainly geared towards winter tourism. Nordic skiing (cross-country skiing) and alpine skiing are important. A ski lift is in operation on the slope south of the village when there is good snowfall.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Frasne to Labergement-Sainte-Marie . Other road connections exist with La Rivière-Drugeon , Censeau and Remoray-Boujeons .
