Mairie Les Fontenelles

Les Fontenelles is a French municipality with 568 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Les Fontenelles is located at an altitude of 895  m , eight kilometers southwest of the village of Maîche and about twelve kilometers north-northwest of the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a slope gently sloping to the south on the edge of the Maîche plateau between the deeply cut valleys of the Doubs and Dessoubre .

The area of the 8.38 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the low relief high plateau of Maîche, which averages 880  m . It consists mainly of meadow and pasture land, but also shows some larger forest areas, in particular the Grand Bois (the "Great Forest"). The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the north, the municipal area extends to the height of Les Fontenelles. It forms an elongated, mostly wooded ridge that culminates in the Vieux Ban with 962  m (highest elevation of Les Fontenelles).

The neighboring communities of Les Fontenelles are Saint-Julien-lès-Russey in the north, Frambouhans in the east and Bonnétage in the south and west.

On January 1, 2009 there was a change in the arrondissement membership of the municipality. Previously belonging to the arrondissement of Montbéliard , all municipalities of the canton came to the arrondissement of Pontarlier.

Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, there has been a steady increase in the number of inhabitants.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Les Fontenelles was a village dominated by agriculture (cattle breeding and dairy farming) and forestry. In addition, there are now various small businesses, especially in the watchmaking and wood processing sectors. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns. Les Fontenelles is the location of the school and boarding school Saint-Joseph.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D437 road from Montbéliard to Morteau . Further road connections exist with Orchamps-Vennes and Saint-Julien-lès-Russey.
