View of Maîche

Maîche is a French commune with 4,286 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is the capital of the canton of Maîche in the arrondissement of Montbéliard .

geography

Maîche is located at 780  m , about halfway between Montbéliard and Morteau , about 30 kilometers south of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , at the western foot of Mont Miroir , in a hollow open to the Dessoubre valley in the northwest on the edge of the wide high plateau.

The area of the 17.42 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The northern part of the area is occupied by the Mulde von Maîche, which topographically belongs to the catchment area of the Dessoubre. It is bordered in the north-west by the Maîche castle hill ( 837  m ), in the north-east by the predominantly wooded Mont Miroir , on which Maîche's highest point is reached at 981 m.

To the south, the community area extends over an approximately 20 to 40 meter high step on the extensive high plateau, which is only slightly relief and averages 830 m. It is predominantly made up of meadow and pasture land, but also shows some larger forest areas. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The southern border runs in the area of the heights of Charquemont (up to 900 m). In the south-west the communal soil extends to the height of the Faux Verger ( 978  m ) on the edge of the deep cut of the Dessoubre valley.

In addition to the actual village, Maîche also includes new quarters on the high plateau as well as various hamlets and numerous individual farms, including:

  • La Seigne ( 795  m ) in a hollow west of the village
  • Saint-Michel ( 820  m ) on the high plateau
  • Les Combes ( 810  m ) on the high plateau at the southern foot of Mont Miroir
  • Le Rond-Buisson ( 850  m ) on the lower southwest slope of Mont Miroir
  • Les Bichets ( 823  m ) on the high plateau
  • Les Seignottes ( 825  m ) on the high plateau
  • Le Prélot ( 833  m ) in a hollow on the high plateau

Neighboring municipalities of Maîche are Mancenans-Lizerne , Les Bréseux and Thiébouhans in the north, Cernay-l'Église in the east, Charquemont , Les Écorces and Frambouhans in the south and Saint-Julien-lès-Russey and Mont-de-Vougney in the west.

history

Since the Middle Ages, Maîche has been the center of a lordship whose castle was on the hill of the Vieux Château to the north-west of the village. The hamlet of Maîche has existed since the 13th century and has always been the most important place on the high plateau between the valleys of Dessoubre and Doubs . With the construction of the Château de Montalembert in 1524 on the western outskirts, the manor was relocated here. Together with Franche-Comté , Maîche came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

In the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, Maîche experienced an economic boom with the introduction of the watch industry. The clocks were initially mainly manufactured at home, and from around 1880 in factories. Maîche received better transport connections in 1905 with the opening of the narrow-gauge railway (Le Tacot), which ran from Morteau via Maîche (terminus) to Trévillers. However, the operation of this railway line ceased in 1952.

Attractions

  • The Church of Saint-Pierre (St. Peter) was built from 1753 to 1760 on the site of an earlier church in a classical style with baroque influences. It has a remarkable interior (mostly from the Baroque period ), including a richly carved wooden pulpit and a monumental altarpiece.
  • The Château de Montalembert on the western outskirts, which was built in 1524 and redesigned and expanded several times in the following centuries, is located in a large French park.
  • Other important secular buildings include the Château de Malseigne (from the 16th and 17th centuries) and the Hôtel de Granvelle (16th century). Town houses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the old town center.
  • The Chapelle des Anges (or Chapelle Saint-Michel ) rises south of the village on the site of a former priory. It was rebuilt in 1848.
  • The ruins and remains of the keep of the medieval castle ( Vieux Château ) have been preserved.

With 4286 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Maîche is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Doubs department. The population rose continuously in the course of industrialization from 1800 to 1920, before stagnating for a long time. Another strong growth was recorded from 1950 to the mid-1970s. Around this time the population reached its highest level with almost 4400 inhabitants.

Economy and Infrastructure

Maîche was already a place characterized by the trade and processing of agricultural products in the area. Today it performs central functions for the surrounding area. Maîche is the location of various shopping centers and numerous retail stores. In the industrial sector, watch production no longer has the same importance as in the first half of the 20th century, but there are still several companies in this sector, including the décolletage. Other important branches of industry are micromechanics, electroplating, metal construction and wood processing. Thanks to the large municipal area, agriculture (cattle breeding and dairy farming, arable farming) and forestry still play a certain role. Maîche also has two colleges (Collège Mont Mirroir and the private Catholic Collège St. Joseph), a boarding school and an institute for medical training.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D437 road from Montbéliard to Morteau . Other regionally important road connections exist with La Chaux-de-Fonds , Saignelégier and Sancey-le-Grand .

Community partnerships

Maîche has maintained a community partnership with Kressbronn on Lake Constance since 1978 . There is also a partnership with Ondougou (Mali).
