Mairie Laire |
Laire is a French commune of 400 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Laire is located at 380 m , about seven kilometers northwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends northwest of the basin of Montbéliard and north of the Doube valley , on a plateau on the western edge of the heights of the Grand Bois.
The area of the 3.17 km² municipal area covers a section of the undulating landscape north of the Doubstal. The western part of the area is occupied by the Laire plateau, which is an average of 390 m. It is mostly made up of arable and meadow land. To the southeast, the community area extends into the extensive forest area of the Grand Bois (up to 420 m), in which the highest point of Laire is reached at 462 m. The entire area shows no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.
Neighboring municipalities of Laire are Verlans and Tavey in the north, Vyans-le-Val in the east, Montbéliard and Raynans in the south and Aibre and Trémoins in the west.
history
The first written mention of Laire took place in 1231 under the name Layr . Since the Middle Ages Laire belonged to the domain of the Counts of Montbéliard. The Lords of Héricourt also owned land in the municipality. With the annexation of the county of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) , the village finally came into French hands in 1793. Today Laire is part of the Pays d'Héricourt municipal association .

With 400 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Laire is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 85 and 115 people, a marked increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has tripled.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Laire was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the Montbéliard agglomeration.
The village is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Héricourt to Sainte-Marie . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 14 kilometers away.
