Montandon is a French municipality with 405 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Montandon is located at 733  m , seven kilometers north-northeast of Maîche and about 23 kilometers south of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the north of the extensive high plateau of Maîche, high above the deeply cut valley of the Doubs with the town of Saint-Hippolyte .

The area of the 12.71 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the low relief high plateau of Montandon, which averages 730 m. It consists mainly of meadow and pasture land and is divided by the ridge of the Bois du Désert ( 794  m ). The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The plateau is bounded in the west by the valleys of Dessoubre and its side stream Ruisseau de la Forge , in the north by the Doubstal. The municipal boundary mostly runs above the steep slope. In the east the border lies in the area of the Charbonney brook (tributary of the Doubs). To the south, the terrain gradually rises to the wooded heights of La Crote ( 847  m ), Le Mont ( 862  m ), Les Côtards (at 880 m the highest point in Montandon) and Les Gratery ( 834  m ). In between there are various dry valleys and hollows, which topographically belong to the catchment area of Ruisseau de la Forge and Charbonney.

The hamlet of Vacheresse ( 814  m ) on a promontory above the valley of the Ruisseau de la Forge and various farms belong to Montandon . Neighboring municipalities of Montandon are Saint-Hippolyte and Soulce-Cernay in the north, Les Plains-et-Grands-Essarts and Trévillers in the east, Thiébouhans in the south and Les Bréseux in the southwest.

history

The municipality of Montandon was populated very early. Traces from the Bronze Age have been discovered in the Abri Sous la Roche . In the Middle Ages, Montandon was part of the county of La Roche de Saint-Hippolyte. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The Saint-Ursin church was rebuilt in 1573 on the site of a previous medieval building; the choir was extensively restored in 1700. Various farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries in the traditional Haut-Doubs style have been preserved in the town center.

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (431 people were still counted in 1886), population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Montandon was a village dominated by agriculture (cattle breeding and dairy farming). In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from the main D437 road that connects Montbéliard with Morteau . Another road connection is with Trévillers.
