Le Vernoy is a French municipality with 168 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Le Vernoy is located at 395 m , about eleven kilometers west-northwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the far north of the department on a plateau in the headwaters of the Rupt, in the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north-west, at the north foot of the Bois d'Arcey ridge. Le Vernoy is the northernmost municipality in the Doubs department.
The 3.30 km² municipal area covers a section of the undulating landscape north of the Doube valley. The main part of the area is occupied by the Le Vernoy plateau, which is an average of 390 m. It represents the headwaters of the Rupt, which provides drainage to the southeast through a narrow valley to the Arcey plateau. The plateau is partly made up of arable and meadow land, in the northern section of forest ( Bois de l'Abbaye ). The plateau is flanked in the south by the foothills of the Bois d'Arcey ( 480 m ), in the east by the height of the Grand Bois , on which the highest point of Le Vernoy is reached at 500 m. With a narrow tip, the community area extends northwest into the Chavanne basin.
Neighboring municipalities of Le Vernoy are Champey in the north, Trémoins in the east, Aibre and Désandans in the south and Chavanne and Saulnot in the west.
history
The Vaux-les-Vernois priory was occupied by the Counts of Montbéliard in 1552. Since the Middle Ages, Le Vernoy has belonged to the county of Montbéliard. With the occupation of the county of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) , the village finally came into French hands in 1793. Today, Le Vernoy is part of the Pays d'Héricourt municipality .
religion
There is an old chapel in Le Vernoy, but there are no regular services in Le Vernoy - unlike in the neighboring parish of Aibre .
Attractions
The oldest surviving building in the village is the Duvernoy family house, built in the 17th century.

With 168 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Le Vernoy is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 60 and 90 people, a striking population growth was recorded between 1975 and 1982. Since then, however, a decrease of almost 15% has been observed again.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Le Vernoy was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Aibre to Saulnot. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 16 kilometers away.
