Marvelise is a French municipality with 165 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Marvelise is located at 379  m , nine kilometers north of L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs and about 15 kilometers west of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in a hollow in the hilly landscape north of the Doubstal , between the heights of Chanois in the west and Hautes-Roches in the east.

The area of the 4.21 km² municipal area comprises a section of the hilly landscape north of the Doube valley. The central part of the area is occupied by the Marvelise basin, in which the Scey rises and ensures drainage to the northwest to the Ognon . To the south, a saddle ( 385  m ) leads to the valley of the Ruisseau d'Onans (in the Doubs catchment area), the source of which is also on the communal soil. The valleys are flanked on both sides by limestone plateaus, in the east by the Hautes-Roches (up to 500 m) and in the west by the Chanois , on which the highest point of Marvelise is reached at 516 m. These high plateaus are mostly covered by forest.

Neighboring communities of Onans are Gémonval in the north, Onans in the east and south and Courchaton and Vellechevreux-et-Courbenans in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Marvelise belonged to the lordship of Granges, which came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today, Marvelise is part of the Deux Vallées Vertes municipal association .

Attractions

The Nativité de Notre-Dame (Mary's Birth) church was largely rebuilt in the early 18th century and has a Gothic choir. The old town center is characterized by various farmhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries.

With 165 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Marvelise is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (195 people were counted in 1891), population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Marvelise was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit and wine growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Longevelle-sur-Doubs to Crevans . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 18 kilometers away.
