geography
Vernois-lès-Belvoir is located at 514 m , six kilometers northeast of Sancey-le-Grand and about 24 kilometers southwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a basin through which the Barbèche flows, at the southern foot of the Lomont chain and at the eastern foot of the Mont de Belvoir.
The area of the 4.68 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the Vernois basin, which is on average 500 m. This area is mostly made up of arable and meadow land. Various source brooks of the Barbèche flow together in the basin, which drains the area east to the Doubs . The basin is flanked in the west by the high plateau of Mont de Belvoir, which has a roughly 100 m high steep slope. Through the erosion valleys of the Barbèche and its side streams, the plateau is divided into various protrusions. The municipal boundary mostly runs on the edge of the plateau above the steep slope. At 652 m in the very south at the transition to the Provenchère high plateau, the highest point of Vernois-lès-Belvoir is reached.
Neighboring municipalities of Vernois-lès-Belvoir are Vyt-lès-Belvoir in the north, Valonne and Rosières-sur-Barbèche in the east, Provenchère in the south and Belvoir in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Vernois first belonged to the domain of Belvoir and then to that of Châtillon-sous-Maîche. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
