Saint-Antoine church

Cernay-l'Église is a French municipality with 302 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Cernay-l'Église is located at 870  m , two kilometers east of Maîche and about 30 kilometers south of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a panoramic position on the southern slope of Mont Miroir , above the extensive high plateau of Maîche.

The area of the 5.95 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The southern part of the area is occupied by the low relief high plateau of Maîche, which averages 820 m. It consists mainly of meadow and pasture land, but also shows some larger forest areas. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the north, the community area extends over the slope of Cernay to the ridge of Mont Miroir , on which the highest elevation of Cernay-l'Église is reached at 983 m.

Neighboring communities of Cernay-l'Église are Thiébouhans in the north, Damprichard in the east, Charquemont in the south and Maîche in the west.

history

Cernay-l'Église is first mentioned in a document in the 14th century. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Maîche rule and in the 17th century it was dependent on the Bouheliers. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. To avoid confusion with other parishes of the same name, the parish was officially renamed from Cernay to Cernay-l'Église in 1923.

Attractions

The three-aisled Saint-Antoine church was built in the 15th century in the Gothic style. It is richly decorated , including sculptures and statues from the 16th and 17th centuries, a Renaissance altarpiece , a pulpit from the 19th century and a Calvary from the 17th century.

With 302 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Cernay-l'Église is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 120 and 140 people, since the beginning of the 1970s, thanks to the attractive location, there has been continuous population growth.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Cernay-l'Église was a village dominated by agriculture (cattle breeding and dairy farming, some arable farming). Even today, the residents who work in the village live mainly from their work in the first sector. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Maîche. Further road connections exist with Damprichard and Trévillers.
