Mairie Damprichard

Damprichard is a French commune with 1,903 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Damprichard is located at 822  m , six kilometers east of Maîche and about 31 kilometers south of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the edge of the extensive high plateau of Maîche, at the western foot of the forest heights of Le Cotard and Bois de Roichenoz north of the deeply cut valley of the Doubs , near the border with Switzerland .

The area of the municipal area of 21.90 km² covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the low relief high plateau of Maîche, which is on average at 800 m. It consists mainly of meadow and pasture land, but also shows some larger forest areas. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The plateau is delimited on its southeast side by a ridge that extends from the Peu de Grueresse to the northeast over the Cotard ( 990  m ), the Bois de Roichenoz ( 993  m ) to the Pré Maillot , on which at 1023 m the highest elevation of Damprichard is reached. This ridge separates the Maîche plateau from the canyon-like incised valley of the Doubs. It is mainly forested and is subdivided by various hollows and erosion valleys ( Fond de la Seigne , Les Seignes de Damprichard ).

In addition to the actual town center, Damprichard includes various hamlets and numerous individual farms, including:

  • Les Pesses ( 835  m ) on the southern outskirts
  • Chaboudot ( 792  m ) in the middle of the Maîche plateau
  • Le Prélot ( 816  m ) on the edge of the Maîche plateau
  • La Seignotte ( 827  m ) in a valley at the western foot of the Cotard

Neighboring communities of Damprichard are Thiébouhans , Trévillers and Ferrières-le-Lac in the north, Belfays , Urtière and Charmauvillers in the east, Charquemont in the south and Cernay-l'Église in the west.

history

The place name is derived from the Latin name Dominus Ricardus (Mr. Richard), although it is not clear whether it is a saint or a local ruler. The p in Damprichard was not added until the 19th century. Damprichard has belonged to the Grafschaft de la Roche since the 16th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1703 it came under the rule of the Counts of Montjoie, where it remained until the French Revolution . In the 19th century the watch industry was introduced in Damprichard, which shaped the economic life in the village for a long time. The village received better transport connections in 1905 with the opening of the narrow-gauge railway (Le Tacot), which ran from Morteau via Maîche to Trévillers. However, the operation of this railway line ceased in 1952.

Sainte-Madeleine church

The current construction of the Sainte-Madeleine church began in 1743. In 1862 it was enlarged and in 1960 a comprehensive restoration was carried out. The church is richly decorated , including altars, a pulpit and wall paintings from the 18th century.

Some farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries in the traditional Franche-Comté style have been preserved. The Maison Farque (18th century) was used as a hunting lodge for the Counts of Montjoie. The Saint-Roch country chapel is located near the hamlet of Le Prélot.

In the first half of the 20th century, the population was always between 1200 and 1350 people. The population grew steadily from 1950 to the mid-1970s. With more than 2000 inhabitants, the previous high was reached in 1975. After that, the population decreased significantly due to the crisis in the watch industry , only to have remained at an almost constant level since the mid-1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

The watch industry in Damprichard still plays an important role today. Around 300 people are employed in this branch, which includes the companies Burdet, Créat'heure and Silvant. This includes the manufacture of jewelry watches as well as the manufacture of watch cases and bracelets. Other important branches of industry are micromechanics and the wood industry. Thanks to the large municipal area, agriculture (cattle and dairy farming, arable farming) is also important.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the D437a departmental road that leads from Maîche via Goumois to Saignelégier . Further road connections exist with Charquemont and Trévillers.
