Mont-de-Vougney is a French municipality with 186 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Mont-de-Vougney is located at 725  m , seven kilometers west of Maîche and about 31 kilometers south of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a narrow spur in the northwest of the high plateau of Maîche, above the deeply cut valley of the Dessoubre .

The area of the 7.03 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the slightly undulating plateau, which averages 750 m. It consists mainly of meadow and pasture land. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. Towards the southwest, west and north the plateau drops steeply to the 300 m deep erosion valley of the Dessoubre. The municipality boundary runs partly above the steep slope crowned by a ledge, partly halfway along the slope. The community area extends to the south-east up to the ridge of the Faux Verger , where the highest point of Mont-de-Vougney is reached at 942 m.

In addition to the actual village, Mont-de-Vougney also includes various hamlets and numerous individual farms, including:

  • La Chapelle-du-Mont-de-Vougney ( 775  m ) on a hill on the Vougney plateau
  • Le Friolais ( 780  m ) on the plateau at the northern foot of the Faux Verger

Neighboring communities of Mont-de-Vougney are Orgeans-Blanchefontaine in the north, Mancenans-Lizerne in the east, Maîche and Saint-Julien-lès-Russey in the south and Battenans-Varin in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Mont-de-Vougney was part of the dominion of Saint-Julien. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1972 when the previously independent Le Friolais was incorporated into Mont-de-Vougney.

With 186 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Mont-de-Vougney is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1901 were still 223 people), a slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Mont-de-Vougney was a village dominated by agriculture (cattle breeding and dairy farming, some arable farming). Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. Road connections exist with Maîche, Battenans-Varin and Saint-Julien-lès-Russey.
