At 403 m, Fesches-le-Châtel's highest point is reached on the Les Landes corridor . To the east, the municipality floor extends into the 400 m wide valley floor of the Feschotte , in which the main settlement and industrial area is located.

The settlement of Le Rondelot ( 350  m ) in the valley of the Feschotte belongs to Fesches-le-Châtel . Neighboring communities of Fesches-le-Châtel are Allenjoie in the north, Méziré in the east, Dampierre-les-Bois in the south and Étupes in the west.

history

Fesches-le-Châtel was first mentioned in 1282 under the name Fesches-Le-Chastelot . In the Middle Ages, today's municipal area was divided. The settlement of Fesches Moulin was part of the Bélieu rule and was destroyed by the Baslers in 1410, while the old part of the village with the castle belonged to the Cusance rule. In the 15th century, both districts came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard. Since then, Fesches-le-Châtel has been one of the county's four dairy farms. The Reformation was introduced in 1541 . With the annexation of the county of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) , the village finally came into French hands in 1793.

With the opening of the Montbéliard – Morvillars railway on June 29, 1868, Fesches-le-Châtel was connected to the French railway network. Passenger traffic on the line was discontinued in 1938, freight traffic in 1969. The railway line was then closed and completely dismantled between the stations of Dasle-Beaucourt and Morvillars .

The industrialization of Fesches-le-Châtel began at the beginning of the 19th century with the establishment of the Japy factory, which manufactured screws and bolts. The Japy factories have long been the main employers in the village. Over time, the main emphasis was placed on the manufacture of kitchen utensils, especially saucepans, and (during the two world wars) helmets. The village was hit hard when the company closed in 1979. Today Fesches-le-Châtel is part of the Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération municipal association .

The previous high was recorded at the beginning of the 1930s with more than 2,600 people. After a temporary population decrease, 2500 inhabitants were registered again at the beginning of the 1960s. Thereafter, a slow but continuous decline of 15% was registered until 1990.

Economy and Infrastructure

At the beginning of the 19th century, Fesches-le-Châtel developed into an industrial community. Today the industrial and commercial enterprises are in the valley of the Feschotte. The former buildings of the Japy factories were reactivated. Today Cristel SA manufactures stainless steel kitchenware here. Other important companies are represented in the plastics processing, canning and furniture industries. There are also numerous retail shops for daily needs. Many workers are also commuters who work in the other municipalities of the Montbéliard agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a departmental road that leads from Étupes to Morvillars. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around five kilometers away. There are other road connections with Dampierre-les-Bois, Allenjoie and Badevel. Fesches-le-Châtel is connected to the city of Montbéliard by a bus line.
