Karl Dietrich Wolff , often KD Wolff , (born February 27, 1943 in Marburg ) is a German publisher . After his commitment as SDS chairman in the 1968 movement , he made a name for himself as a publisher of historical-critical editions of the complete works of Hölderlin , Kafka , Kleist , Robert Walser , Georg Trakl and Gottfried Keller .

Life

Wolff was the son of a district judge who had been removed from office after the end of National Socialism until 1949. He attended grammar school in Biedenkopf and a high school in the USA, and in 1962 he was a temporary soldier in the German Armed Forces for two years . Wolff studied law at the University of Marburg , where he met the Nazi military lawyer Erich Schwinge , at the University of Freiburg and the University of Frankfurt . Like his younger brother Frank, he was involved in the student movement during his studies . Wolff was based in Freiburg i. Br. In the student parliament and in the AStA and was first chairman of the Socialist German Student Union (SDS) from 1967 to 1968 . After a year as a student senator at the University of Frankfurt (1968/69), Wolff began a tour of the USA in 1969 at the invitation of the Students for a Democratic Society . He was summoned to appear before the Committee on Un-American Activities . After he described the US Senator Strom Thurmond as a “racist bandit”, the US banned Wolff from entering the country. Wolff visited North Korea in 1970 at the invitation of the regime and reported about it in the course book .

1969 co-founder of Wolff was March publishing it . After differences with Jörg Schröder , he founded his first own publishing company, the Roter Stern publishing house, in the following year . In 1979 he founded Stroemfeld Verlag in Basel , which he also relocated to Frankfurt am Main in 1984. In 1993 the Roter Stern publishing house went bankrupt . From that year until 1997 Wolff was a member of the advisory board of the PEN Center Germany .
