Dietrich Eberhard Sattler (* 1939 in Apolda , Thuringia ) is editor of the Frankfurt Hölderlin edition.

Life

Dietrich Sattler - son of a farmer - grew up in Thuringia. The letter E in his author's name stands for the first name Eberhard his mother wanted , but which is not entered in the birth certificate . In 1953 the family moved from the GDR to the Federal Republic . Sattler attended school in Oberurff and Kassel and studied book graphics from 1958 to 1964 at the Werkkunstschule Kassel. After completing his degree, he worked from 1967 to 1973 as an advertising manager for a car dealer and as a marketing consultant for a dairy cooperative.

Since 1972 Sattler has devoted himself to the edition of the works of the German poet Friedrich Hölderlin (1770–1843). He developed a process that allows the exact text-genetic reproduction of handwritten works. With his editing practice, Sattler has revolutionized the Germanistic method of editing handwritten works and, in particular, enforced the consistent facsimile of all manuscripts. In preparation for the edition of Hölderlin's translations from Latin and Greek, Sattler transferred Virgil's Eclogues and Oedipus to Colonos of Sophocles.

The Frankfurt edition of Hölderlin's works (FHA) was published from 1975 to 2008 by Roter Stern and Stroemfeld / Roter Stern. Initially, it met with a decided rejection of the established Hölderlin research, which was fixed on the Stuttgart edition, but over time it gained more and more approval.

From 1978 until his retirement, Sattler worked as a research assistant at the University of Bremen . In 1987 he founded the Neue Bremer Presse publishing house and from 1987 to 1991 edited and compiled the Bremen Bible on the basis of Martin Luther's Biblia deutsch from 1545. Part of the financing of this bibliophile, 22 volumes of the Bible edition furnished by Friedrich Meckseper with 22 etchings of the Hebrew alphabet has Jan Philipp Reemtsma involved.

Sattler wrote libretti for the composers Wolfgang von Schweinitz , Walter Zimmermann and Hans Zender . From his youth to subscribing to the New Bach Edition , Sattler began his second major edition project, Bach deciphering , which was the vocal basis in Johann Sebastian Bach 's instrumental works at the end of the 1990s .

He is a member of the German PEN Center .

Sattler and his family lived until 2003 in the neighborhood of Bremen and now lives in Treia at the Treene . He is married and has three grown children.
