Belleherbe is a French municipality with 625 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Belleherbe is located at an altitude of 740  m about eleven kilometers west of Maîche and about 30 km south-southwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura in a panoramic position on a slope of the ridge that slopes slightly to the east, which accompanies the valley of the Dessoubre on its northwest side.

The area of the 16.13 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the ridge that overlooks the plateau northwest of the Dessoubre valley and extends from the Belmont near Pierrefontaine-les-Varans in the southwest to the Montaigu in the northeast. This mountain range is divided into various knolls and hills, which are partly wooded, partly with meadows and pastureland. At 854 m, the highest point in Belleherbe is reached at Chamesey. The peaks are generally about 100 m higher than the surrounding plateau (an average of 700 m). The eastern boundary runs mostly along the upper edge of the steep drop to the valley system of the Dessoubre. With a narrow tip, the community soil extends northeast to Montaigu. To the west, the community area extends over the ridge into the Pierrefontaine basin.

In addition to the actual village, Belleherbe also includes various hamlets and numerous individual farms, including:

  • La Violette ( 730  m ) in the extreme northeast of the Pierrefontaine basin
  • Ebey ( 765  m ) at the height west of Belleherbe
  • Les Plains ( 690  m ) on the plateau north-west of the Dessoubre valley
  • Droitfontaine ( 705  m ) on a terrace southwest of the Montaigu

Neighboring municipalities of Belleherbe are Surmont , Provenchère , La Grange and Froidevaux in the north, Les Terres-de-Chaux , Valoreille , Vauclusotte , Cour-Saint-Maurice and Vaucluse in the east, Charmoille and Chamesey in the south and Pierrefontaine-les-Varans and Laviron in the West.

history

In the Middle Ages, Belleherbe was part of the dominion of Saint-Maurice. Together with Franche-Comté, the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. There was a change of area in 1972 when the previously independent Droitfontaine was incorporated into Belleherbe.

Attractions

Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church was built in 1754 and has important murals. At the edge of the forest above the village is the Chapelle de la Combe, built in 1857. There are other places of worship in Droitfontaine and La Violette.

With 603 inhabitants (2005), Belleherbe is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (743 people were counted in 1881), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Belleherbe was a village dominated by agriculture (cattle breeding and dairy farming, some arable and fruit growing). In addition, there are now some local small businesses, especially in the retail sector. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Maîche to Sancey-le-Grand . There are other road links with Pierrefontaine-les-Varans, Charmoille, Valoreille and Les Terres-de-Chaux.
