Mairie Saint-Maurice-Colombier

Saint-Maurice-Colombier is a French municipality with 907 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Saint-Maurice-Colombier is located at 307  m , about 14 kilometers southwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the valley of the Ruisseau du Bié just before its confluence with the Doubs , on the northern edge of the extreme ridges of the Jura .

The area of the 13.29 km² municipal area includes a section of the Doubstal. The western and northern borders run along the Doubs, which flows here with several bends in a flat valley about one kilometer wide and is accompanied by the waterway of the Rhine-Rhône Canal . At Colombier-Châtelot the Ruisseau du Bié flows into the Doubs, the valley of which is the main settlement area of the municipality. The Ruisseau du Bié is flanked on both sides by plateaus, which are an average of 350 m, are predominantly made up of arable land and meadow, and lower slightly towards the Doube valley. To the southeast, the municipal area extends over the Bié and its side valleys (including that of the Ruisseau de Sourans ) to the Tafeljura plateau at Goux-lès-Dambelin. At 491 m above Échelotte, the highest point in Saint-Maurice-Colombier is reached.

The municipality consists of different districts:

  • Saint-Maurice ( 307  m ) in the valley and on the slope of the Ruisseau du Bié to the north
  • Colombier-Châtelot ( 297  m ) at the mouth of the Ruisseau du Bié in the Doubs
  • Échelotte ( 460  m ) on a plateau at the entrance to the Goux-lès-Dambelin plateau

Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Maurice-Colombier are Longevelle-sur-Doubs in the north, Colombier-Fontaine and Villars-sous-Écot in the east, Goux-lès-Dambelin and Sourans in the south and Blussans and Blussangeaux in the west.

history

Traces of a Roman traffic route and from prehistoric times point to an early settlement of the municipality of Saint-Maurice-Colombier. Saint-Maurice is mentioned in 1405. In the Middle Ages, the village and Colombier belonged to the Châtelot dominion, which in 1561 came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) through purchase . They introduced the Reformation . In 1700 the French occupiers withdrew the church from the Lutheran community. With the Versailles Treaty of 1748, the villages came to France. The hamlet of Échelotte was founded in the 17th century by farmers who immigrated from the Swiss canton of Neuchâtel. After the revolution, the church was returned to the Lutheran congregation on April 29, 1792.

To avoid confusion with other communities of the same name, Saint-Maurice was officially renamed Saint-Maurice-Échelotte in 1922. Since 1972, the two localities Saint-Maurice-Échelotte and Colombier-Châtelot were united in the form of an associated merger under the name of Saint-Maurice-Colombier. However, the actual merger did not take effect until January 1, 2002. Today, Saint-Maurice-Colombier is part of the Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération municipal association .

Attractions

The church (Temple luthérien) stands on the heights above Saint-Maurice between the Doubs and Bié valleys. It originally dates back to a building from 1402, but was rebuilt after a fire in 1636 (1650) and enlarged in the 18th century. After the destruction in 1944, it had to be extensively restored. Various farmhouses in the traditional Franche-Comté style from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the village. In Colombier-Châtelot there are ruins of the Châtelot castle.

With 907 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Maurice-Colombier is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (in 1881 there were still 526 people), there has been a marked increase in population since the early 1960s. Since then the number of inhabitants has more than doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Maurice-Colombier was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Montbéliard agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs to Colombier-Fontaine. The closest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is around 14 kilometers away. Other road links exist with Longevelle-sur-Doubs and Villars-sous-Écot. Saint-Maurice has a train station on the railway line from Besançon to Montbéliard.
