geography

Orve is located at 465 m, four kilometers northwest of Sancey-le-Grand and about 27 kilometers southwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a wide hollow south of the Lomont chain .

The area of the 5.51 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Chazot basin, which averages 460 m and is one kilometer wide and about 2 km long. It is mainly made up of arable and meadow land. The depression is part of a dry valley that topographically belongs to the Cusancin catchment area . However, there are no surface rivers because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The eastern border is marked by a ridge that separates Orve from the Sancey basin. At 671 m, Orve's highest point is reached here in the Bois de Fayts. To the north, the municipal area extends to the foot of the Lomont chain in the area of the Col de Ferrière pass.

After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (193 people were counted in 1881), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Orve was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs to Vellevans .
