geography

Bridge over the Dessoubre in Battenans-Varin

Battenans-Varin is located at 560  m , seven kilometers west of Maîche and about 30 km south of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The double municipality extends in the Jura , on a terrace on the southeastern slope of the Dessoubre valley , at the northern foot of Mont de Vougney.

The area of the 6.38 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The western and northern border runs along the Dessoubre, which flows in a winding course deeply cut into the surrounding Jura high plateaus to the northeast. The steep valley slopes are criss-crossed by limestone bands. From the course of the river, the community area extends south-east over a 100 m high steep slope onto the terrace of Battenans. This terrain terrace is overlooked by a steep, predominantly wooded slope with an average height of 150 m, which leads to the plateau of Mont-de-Vougney. At 740 m, the highest point of Battenans-Varin is reached here. The eastern municipal boundary mostly runs above the steep slope, which is crowned in various places by the rocks of a resistant limestone layer.

The southern part of the area includes the catchment area of the Varin brook, which is cut deep into the surrounding plateaus. It is bordered to the north by the Mont-de-Vougney promontory, to the east by the heights of the Faux Verger and to the south by Mont Olivot .

The community consists of the two districts of Battenans ( 560  m ) on the terrace and Varin ( 450  m ) in the basin of the village stream at the foot of Mont de Vougney. Neighboring municipalities of Battenans-Varin are Cour-Saint-Maurice in the north, Orgeans-Blanchefontaine and Mont-de-Vougney in the east, Saint-Julien-lès-Russey and Rosureux in the south and Vaucluse in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Battenans and Varin belonged to the dominion of Saint-Julien. Together with Franche-Comté , both villages came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since the time of the French Revolution , Varin was part of the municipality of Battenans. To avoid confusion with other parishes of the same name, Battenans was officially renamed Battenans-Varin in 1936.

With 76 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Battenans-Varin is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (250 people were still counted in 1891), slight growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Battenans-Varin was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (cattle and dairy farming, arable and fruit growing). Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are very few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from the D39 (road through the Dessoubre valley). Other road connections exist with Orgeans and Mont-de-Vougney.
