L'Hôpital-Saint-Lieffroy is a French municipality with 114 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

L'Hôpital-Saint-Lieffroy is located at 337  m , nine kilometers northeast of Baume-les-Dames and about 27 kilometers west-southwest of the city of Montbéliard (beeline). The village extends in a hollow on the edge of the limestone plateau between the river valleys of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north, at the northwest foot of the Bois de Montfort.

The area of ​​the 3.43 km² municipal area covers a section of the undulating landscape between the Doubs and Ognon. The main part of the area is occupied by a valley basin that opens to the east to the Doubstal. The southern boundary runs on a wooded height ( Bois de la Charme and Bois de la Baumotte ), which separates L'Hôpital-Saint-Lieffroy from the Doubstal. The highest point in the community is reached here at 445 m. To the north, the community area extends to the adjacent limestone plateau (up to 420 m).

Neighboring municipalities of L'Hôpital-Saint-Lieffroy are Fontaine-lès-Clerval in the north, Pays de Clerval with Clerval in the east, Hyèvre-Paroisse in the south and Voillans in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages there was an infirmary near today's village. The village belonged to Kastlanei Clerval, which came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 114 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), L'Hôpital-Saint-Lieffroy is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. During the 20th century, the population always moved in the range between 50 and 90 people.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, L'Hôpital-Saint-Lieffroy was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Horse breeding in particular is still very important today. There are also some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Clerval to Autechaux . The next connection to the A36 motorway , which affects the municipality, is about ten kilometers away. Another road connection is with Fontaine-lès-Clerval.
