Les Terres-de-Chaux is a French municipality with 135 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Les Terres-de-Chaux is located at 700  m , nine kilometers northwest of Maîche and about 22 kilometers south of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the edge of a plateau surrounded on three sides by deep valleys, in the north by the Barbèche, in the east by the Doubs and in the south by the Dessoubre .

The area of the 14.49 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by an undulating highland, which is an average of 700 m. Important components of this highland are from south to north the ridge of the Montaigu (at 860 m the highest elevation of Les Terres-de-Chaux; marks the southern municipal boundary), the approximately one kilometer wide depression of Courcelles, the heights of Chaux and the ledge from Neuvier. The area consists mainly of meadow and pasture land. There are no surface rivers here because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the east, the plateau drops steeply to the Doubs valley and is divided into rocky protrusions (including that of Châtillon). In the north, the border mostly runs along the upper edge of the steep slope that leads to the erosion valley of the Barbèche.

The municipality of Les Terres-de-Chaux consists of four independent villages until 1969:

  • Chaux-lès-Châtillon ( 690  m ) on a hill of the plateau, high above the Doube valley
  • Châtillon-sous-Maîche ( 649  m ) on the eastern edge of the high plateau above the steep drop to the Doubstal
  • Courcelles-lès-Châtillon ( 680  m ) in a depression at the northern foot of the Montaigu
  • Neuvier ( 700  m ) on a plateau above the Doubstal

Neighboring municipalities of Les Terres-de-Chaux are Solemont , Feule and Dampjoux in the north, Bief and Fleurey in the east, Valoreille and Belleherbe in the south and Froidevaux and Péseux in the west.

history

The oldest village in today's municipality of Les Terres-de-Chaux is Chaux, which was first mentioned as a church location under the name Calcina in a bull by Pope Innocent II from the first quarter of the 12th century. The beginnings of Châtillon Castle, next to which the town of Châtillon developed, are in the dark. The existence of this castle, strategically located on a vertically sloping rock ledge, has been documented since the beginning of the 13th century. The lordship of Châtillon-sous-Maîche, to which the other localities in the vicinity belonged, was successively owned by the Counts of La Roche, the Lords of Vienne and the Marquis of Hochberg. The castle served as a refuge for the population of the region several times, namely during the Burgundy Wars (1480) and the Thirty Years' War , when the localities were badly affected. During the conquests of Franche-Comté in 1668 and 1674 by Louis XIV , the castle was occupied and destroyed in 1675. Together with Franche-Comté , the area finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

In November 1969, the four small communities of Châtillon-sous-Maîche (1968: 56 inhabitants), Chaux-lès-Châtillon (26 inhabitants), Courcelles-lès-Châtillon (62 inhabitants) and Neuvier (41 inhabitants) joined the new municipality of Les Terres -de-Chaux together.

Attractions

The Saint-Léger church in Chaux-lès-Châtillon was built in the 12th century and remodeled in the 14th and 16th centuries. It has remarkable furnishings , including statues (15th to 17th centuries), a stone pulpit (16th century) and an altar from the 17th century. The rectory dates from the 17th century. The ruins of the former Châtillon Castle (13th century) have been preserved. The Grosse Maison , a former manor house, is located in Neuvier .

With 135 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Les Terres-de-Chaux is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After 322 inhabitants were counted in today's municipality in 1881, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously throughout the 20th century.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Les Terres-de-Chaux was a village dominated by agriculture (dairy farming and cattle breeding, arable farming). Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in local small business. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Belleherbe to Saint-Hippolyte . Further road connections exist with Bief and Valoreille.
