Accolans is a French municipality with 96 inhabitants (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Accolans is located at an altitude of 424  m above sea level, seven kilometers northwest of L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs and about 21 kilometers west of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in a valley in the hilly landscape north of the Doubstal , west of the heights of Accolans.

The area of the 5.18 km² municipal area covers a section of the hilly landscape north of the Doubstal. The central part of the area is occupied by the Accolans valley. It opens towards the south to the Doubs valley, but does not show any surface running water because the rainwater seeps into the karst subsoil of the limestone plateaus. To the north, a saddle, which forms the municipal boundary, leads over to the catchment area of the Ognon . The Accolans basin is bounded on both sides by plateaus, including the Mont de la Chèvre and the Rocheret, which are partly covered with arable land and meadow, partly with forest. At 532 m, the highest point of Accolans is reached at the height northeast of the village.

Neighboring municipalities of Accolans are Grammont and Courchaton in the north, Geney in the east, Mancenans and Soye in the south and Bournois in the west.

history

The municipality of Accolans was already settled in the Neolithic, which has been proven by excavations on the La Motte du Châtelot promontory north of the village. The area around Accolans was probably cleared and made arable in the 12th century by monks from the Cistercian monastery of Lieu-Croissant . In the Middle Ages, Accolans belonged to the Granges rule, which came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté, the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Accolans is part of the Deux Vallées Vertes municipal association .

With 96 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Accolans is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (189 people were still counted in 1911), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since then.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Accolans was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs to Grammont. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 17 kilometers away. Another road connection is with Bournois .
