Appenans is a French municipality with 376 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Appenans is located at 294 m , one and a half kilometers west of L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs and about 19 kilometers west-southwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends on the northern edge of the Doubs valley at the entrance to a short side valley, on the northern edge of the extreme ridges of the Jura .
The area of the 4.07 km² municipal area includes a section of the Doubstal. The southern border runs along the Doubs, which flows here with several turns in a flat valley low about one kilometer wide and at the same time forms the waterway of the Rhine-Rhône Canal . From the course of the river, the community area extends northwards over the valley floodplain to the adjacent plateaus (320 to 350 m), which are divided by several small valley cuts. The plateau is mainly made up of arable and meadow land. To the north, the terrain gradually rises to the limestone plateaus north of the Doubs. In the north-west, Appenans has a share in the forest hill Le Replain , at which the highest point in the municipality is reached at 400 m.
Neighboring municipalities of Appenans are Étrappe in the north, Médière and L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs in the east, Rang in the south and Mancenans in the west.
history
Together with Franche-Comté, Appenans came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today the village is part of the Communauté de communes des Isles du Doubs .
Attractions
The current village church of Saint-Nicolas was built in the 20th century. It contains parts of the furnishings of the earlier church.
Remains of a former mill, which used the water power of the village stream, have been preserved.

With 376 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Appenans is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 230 and 290 people, there has been significant population growth since the early 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Appenans was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs to Rougemont . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around eight kilometers away. Another road connection is with Courchaton.
