Mairie Soulce-Cernay

Soulce-Cernay is a French municipality with 127 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Soulce-Cernay is located at 393  m , four kilometers east of Saint-Hippolyte and about 21 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a valley widening of the Doubs at the mouth of the Charbonney stream, between the heights of the Lomont chain in the north and the Maîche plateau in the south, near the border with Switzerland .

The area of the 8.55 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Doubstal. The Doubs flows here in a winding course to the west through a flat valley depression that is no more than 500 meters wide. About two kilometers above the village, the river is dammed up into an elongated valley lake to generate electricity. The valley is flanked on both sides by steep, mostly wooded slopes, which are criss-crossed by ledges in various places. These slopes are subdivided by several valley cuts of short side streams of the Doubs, in particular the Cul-de-Sac (from which the Charbonney stream originates).

To the south, the community area extends over the Grande Côte to the level of the Queue de Veau , on which the highest point of Soulce-Cernay is reached at 850 m. In the north, the border runs above the striking rock band that leads to the Chamesol plateau ( 700  m ).

In addition to the actual village, Soulce-Cernay also includes several hamlets and farms, including:

  • La Saunerie ( 385  m ) on the Doubs west of Soulce
  • Cernay ( 510  m ) in a hollow on the left slope of the Doubs

Neighboring communities of Soulce-Cernay are Chamesol and Montjoie-le-Château in the north, Courtefontaine in the east, Les Plains-et-Grands-Essarts and Montandon in the south and Saint-Hippolyte in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Soulce belonged to the territory of the county of La Roche de Saint-Hippolyte. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The Saint-Laurent church originally dates back to a medieval building from the 11th century. The current building dates from 1785.

With 127 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Soulce-Cernay is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (230 people were still counted in 1886), population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Soulce-Cernay was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (cattle and dairy farming, some arable and fruit growing) and forestry. There used to be a forge on the western edge of the village. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Saint-Hippolyte to Saint-Ursanne . Another road connection is with Les Plains-et-Grands-Essarts.
