Charmoille is a French municipality with 330 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Charmoille is located at 680 m , ten kilometers west of Maîche and about 31 kilometers south-southwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on an extensive high plateau on the northwest side of the Dessoubre valley .
The area of the 10.14 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the plateau of Charmoille, which is on average 700 m. It rises slightly towards the south and is predominantly made up of meadow and pasture land, but also shows a larger forest area. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the east and south, the plateau descends with a steep slope to the Dessoubre valley about 250 m below. The slopes are dominated by limestone walls in various places. The municipal boundary runs partly on the upper edge of the slope, partly along the slope and in the very south extends almost down to the Dessoubre valley. To the west the community area extends to the wide ridge of Chamesey, on which the highest elevation of Charmoille is reached at 863 m.
Charmoille's neighboring municipalities are Belleherbe in the north, Vaucluse in the east, Rosureux in the south and Bretonvillers , Longevelle-lès-Russey and Chamesey in the west.
Attractions
The Saint-Ursin church was built in the 18th century. Various farmhouses in the traditional Franche-Comté style from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center. The Saint-Claude chapel, west of the village, dates from the 19th century.

With 330 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Charmoille is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 340 and 420 people, a continuous decline in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1960s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Charmoille was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (cattle and dairy farming, some arable and fruit growing). In addition, there are now some local small businesses, especially in the watchmaking, construction and wood processing sectors. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Belleherbe to Bretonvillers. Another road connection is with Vaucluse.
