Longevelle-lès-Russey is a French commune with a population of 46 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Longevelle-lès-Russey is located at 714 m, ten kilometers west of Maîche and about 32 kilometers south-southwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on an extensive high plateau on the northwest side of the Dessoubre valley .

The area of ​​the 10.14 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the Longevelle plateau, which is an average of 700 m. It rises slightly towards the east and consists mainly of meadow and pasture land. At 742 m, the highest point of Longevelle-lès-Russey is reached on a knoll on the eastern border of the municipality. South of the village begins the short but deeply cut erosion valley of a short side stream of the Dessoubre. To the south-east, the plateau descends with a steep slope to the Dessoubre valley about 250 m below. The border mostly runs along the top of the slope.

Neighboring communities of Longevelle-lès-Russey are Chamesey in the north, Charmoille in the east and south and Bretonvillers in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Longevelle belonged to the domain of Le Russey. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

On January 1, 2009 there was a change in the arrondissement membership of the municipality. Previously belonging to the arrondissement of Montbéliard , all municipalities of the canton came to the arrondissement of Pontarlier.

With 46 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Longevelle-lès-Russey is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 60 and 75 people, a population decline was recorded during the 1960s. Since then, the population has remained at a constant level.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Longevelle-lès-Russey was mainly characterized by agriculture (cattle and dairy farming, some arable and fruit growing). In addition, there are now local small businesses, including a transport company. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Chamesey to Bretonvillers.
