Vuillecin is a French municipality with 641 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Vuillecin is 816 m above sea level, about five kilometers northwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The clustered village extends in the Jura , in the eastern part of the wide high plateau of Arlier (Pontarlier-Frasne), near the Drugeon , at the southern foot of the hill of the Côte du Fol.
The area of the 14.24 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The southern part of the area is taken up by the high plateau of Arlier, which is on average 810 m and is mostly covered by meadows. The Drugeon used to meander through this plain; today it is canalised and drains the area east to the Doubs . To the northwest, the community area extends over the broad ridge of the Côte du Fol , which is almost entirely wooded, to the plateau of La Vrine . On the Côte du Fol, the highest point of Vuillecin is reached at 944 m. The north-eastern boundary is formed by the Crêt de Cotaroz ( 892 m ) and the meadows of Prés Ambert .
Neighboring municipalities of Vuillecin are Goux-les-Usiers and Bugny in the north, Arçon and Doubs in the east, Dommartin in the southwest and Bians-les-Usiers in the west.
history
Various finds that were unearthed during excavations of the Tumulus de Cotaroz indicate that the municipality of Vuillecin was already inhabited in prehistoric times. In the Middle Ages, Vuillecin was the site of a house of the Templars, founded by the Lords of Joux. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The village church of Saint-Claude was built in 1804. Two other chapels date from the 19th century: Saint-Georges (1852) and Saint-Lazare. Various farmhouses in the traditional Haut-Doubs style have been preserved in the old town center; the oldest building dates from 1713. The former mill at Drugeon is no longer in operation today.

With 641 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Vuillecin is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (364 people were still counted in 1881), a marked increase in population has been recorded again since the mid-1960s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has more than tripled. Numerous new single-family houses were built outside the old town center.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Vuillecin was primarily a village characterized by agriculture, especially dairy farming and cattle breeding. In addition, there are now some small and medium-sized businesses, including companies in the electrical industry, a concrete plant, a quarry company and retail stores. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in Pontarlier.
Although the village is located away from the larger thoroughfares, it is well developed in terms of traffic. The main access is from Pontarlier on the main road N57, which leads from Besançon to Vallorbe . There are other road connections with Dommartin and Goux-les-Usiers.
