Orsans is a French municipality with 163 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Orsans is located at 525 m above sea level, twelve kilometers south of Baume-les-Dames and about 27 kilometers east of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a wide hollow on both sides of the Audeux brook .

The area of ​​the 8.29 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the Orsans basin, which is partly covered by arable land and meadow, partly by forest. It is drained from the Audeux to the west to the Sesserant and Cusancin . The basin is flanked in the north by the ridge of the Grand Bois , in the west by the heights of Belmont (at 630 m, the highest elevation of Orsans is reached here) and in the south by the high plateau of Vercel. To the northwest, the community area extends into the narrow erosion valley of La Grâce-Dieu ( flowed through by the Audeux ) and to the north adjoining height of the Bois de Grosse Aige (602 m).

Neighboring municipalities of Orsans are Saint-Juan and Passavant in the north, Courtetain-et-Salans in the east, Bremondans and Belmont in the south and Chaux-lès-Passavant and Aïssey in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Orsans belonged to the Passavant estate, which had belonged to the lords of Montbéliard since the 14th century . The castle was sacked by French troops in 1595. Together with Franche-Comté , Orsans came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Orsans is a member of the Portes du Haut-Doubs municipal association .

On January 1, 2009, the arrondissement membership of the municipality was changed. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.

Attractions

The village church of Orsans was built in the 19th century. The Saint-Claude chapel has a stone relief of the twelve apostles. In the center there are various old farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté.

With 163 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Orsans is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (293 people were counted in 1886), a slight increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Orsans was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Baume-les-Dames to Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp . Further road connections exist with Aïssey, Landresse and Belmont.
