geography

Levier is 718  m above sea level, about 19 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the middle of the wide high plateau of Levier, which belongs to the second plateau of the Jura, east of the karst spring of the Lison .

The area of the 44.34 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the high plateau of Levier, which averages 730 m and has a width of around 5 km. It is mostly covered by meadow, but also shows some forest areas, in particular the Forêt de la Joux northeast of the village and the Forêt de Levier in the west. The entire area has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In the south, the ridge of the Forêt de Maublin and the Bois de la Chapelle ( 894  m ) form the delimitation of the plateau and the transition to the Arlier plateau. The northern border runs on the ridge of Malvaux , on which the highest elevation of Levier is reached at 901 m. This elongated ridge, which from a geological and tectonic point of view represents an anticline , is oriented in the direction of west-southwest-east-northeast in accordance with the strike direction of the Jura in this region.

The hamlet of Granges-Maillot ( 780  m ) on the southern slope of the heights of Malveau and some individual farms belong to Levier . Neighboring municipalities of Levier are Labergement-du-Navois , Bolandoz , Reugney and Amathay-Vésigneux in the north, Septfontaines in the east, Chapelle-d'Huin and Boujailles in the south and Villers-sous-Chalamont , Villeneuve-d'Amont and Gevresin in the west.
