La Riviere Drugeon is a French municipality with 902 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

La Rivière-Drugeon is 825  m above sea level, about eleven kilometers west-southwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the wide high plateau of Arlier (Pontarlier-Frasne), on both sides of the Drugeon , which is dammed up here to a pond, northwest of the Montagne du Laveron .

The area of the 19.16 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the high plateau of Arlier, which averages 830 m. It is mostly covered by meadows, but also shows larger moor areas. The area is drained by the Drugeon to the northeast to the Doubs . Earlier meandered the Drugeon through the bogs, today it is largely channeled and south dammed the village into a pond. With a narrow strip of the municipality floor extends northwest over the extensive plateau to the Combe de la Rochette . The community area extends to the southeast over a steep forest slope on the ridge of the Montagne du Laveron , which forms an anticline of the Jura in geological and tectonic terms . On the crest of the Bois de Chôle , the highest point of La Rivière-Drugeon is reached at 1112 m.

Neighboring municipalities of La Rivière-Drugeon are Chapelle-d'Huin , Bulle and Bannans in the north, Sainte-Colombe in the east, La Planée and Bouverans in the south and Dompierre-les-Tilleuls in the west.

history

The municipality of La Rivière-Drugeon was settled very early. During excavations of the Tumulus du Grand Communal, objects from the Bronze Age and the Iron Age were brought to light.

In the Middle Ages there was a castle here that belonged to the Lords of Chalon. Over time, La Rivière developed into a castle town. The neighboring villages of Bonnevaux, Bouverans, Dompierre and Frasne belonged to the rulership of La Rivière. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. To avoid confusion with other parishes of the same name, La Rivière was officially renamed La Rivière-Drugeon in 1923. La Rivière-Drugeon has been a member of the community association Plateau de Frasne et du Val du Drugeon since 2003 .

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Nicolas was built in the 15th century in Gothic styles. It is richly decorated , including tombstones from the 16th century, wooden statues from the 15th and 16th centuries and a pulpit (17th century). Only a few remains of the surrounding walls have survived from the medieval castle.

The village bar "Lou et Let", right on the church square, offers a glimpse into an original French pub.

The biggest attraction of the village is the snail festival ("Fête des Escargots"), which takes place every year on the third weekend in June, at which around 30,000 vineyard snails (now of Eastern European origin) are eaten. The snail festival lasts for three days and has now achieved national cult status.

With 902 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), La Rivière-Drugeon is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (720 people were still counted in 1896), the population has continued to grow again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, La Rivière-Drugeon was primarily a village characterized by agriculture, especially dairy farming and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some small businesses, including a sawmill. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, mainly in Pontarlier. Nowadays, more and more gainfully employed people commute to nearby Switzerland, because the earning potential there is many times higher than in the structurally weak Doubs region.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Pontarlier to Bonnevaux . Other road connections exist with Bannans, Bulle and Dompierre-les-Tilleuls. La Rivière-Drugeon has a station on the railway line that connects Frasne with Pontarlier and Neuchâtel .
