Les Villedieu is a French municipality with 207 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Les Villedieu is located at 941  m above sea level, about 21 kilometers south-southwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The street line village extends in the Jura , on a small hill in the longitudinal basin of the Val de Mouthe, on the southern edge of the Doubs lowlands , north of the Risoux , near the border with Switzerland .

The area of the 15.07 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The northern part of the area is occupied by the 1.5 km wide longitudinal basin of the Val de Mouthe, which forms a syncline in geological and tectonic terms . The Doubs meanders through a wide, partly muddy valley low and drains the area to the northeast. It forms the northern border. To the south, the municipal area extends over a wooded slope ( Forêt des Villedieu ) to the partly wooded, partly pastureland height, which extends from the Mont d'Or to the southwest and leads over to the Petit Risoux . On a crest of the Crêt Sapeau , the highest point of Les Villedieu is reached at 1290 m. There are no surface rivers here because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In the far south, the communal soil extends into the valley of the Grande Combe . The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

The community consists of two districts and numerous individual farms:

  • Villedieu-les-Mouthe ( 944  m ) on a hill south of the Doubs
  • Villedieu-les-Rochejean ( 929  m ) on the southern edge of the Doubs valley

Neighboring communities of Les Villedieu are Sarrageois and Gellin in the west, Brey-et-Maison-du-Bois in the north, Rochejean in the east and the Swiss community Le Lieu in the south.

history

The place name of Villedieu, first mentioned in the 13th century, is derived from the Latin Villa de Dei (hamlet / country estate of God). In the Middle Ages, Villedieu belonged to the Rochejean domain. Together with Franche-Comté , it came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today, Les Villedieu is a member of the Communauté de communes des Hauts du Doubs, which comprises 13 localities .

With 207 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Les Villedieu is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (235 people were still counted in 1901), slight population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Les Villedieu was a village dominated by agriculture, in particular dairy and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares near the D437 departmental road that leads from Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux to Pontarlier. Another road connection is with Rochejean.
