La Sommette is a French municipality with 236 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
La Sommette is located at 712 m above sea level, three kilometers southwest of Pierrefontaine-les-Varans and about 38 kilometers east of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the southwestern part of the wide plateau of Pierrefontaine, above the deeply cut valley of the Reverotte .
The area of the 7.37 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the low relief plateau of Pierrefontaine, which averages 720 m. It is mainly made up of arable and meadow land, but also shows smaller forest areas. The high plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. At 732 m, the highest point of La Sommette is reached on a hill southwest of the village. To the south the plateau drops steeply to the 150 to almost 200 m deep erosion valley of the Reverotte . Various springs arise on the wooded valley slopes, some of which are criss-crossed by ledges. The Reverotte ensures the drainage of the area to the east to Dessoubre .
Neighboring municipalities of La Sommette are Pierrefontaine-les-Varans in the north, Plaimbois-Vennes in the east, Loray in the south and Domprel in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, La Sommette belonged to the Passavant estate , which had belonged to the lords of Montbéliard since the 14th century . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since 1998, La Sommette has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Pierrefontaine-Vercel, which comprises 44 villages .
On January 1, 2009, the arrondissement membership of the municipality was changed. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.
Attractions
The small village church of La Sommette was built in 1725.

With 236 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), La Sommette is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (208 people were still counted in 1881), population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, La Sommette was a village dominated by agriculture (cattle breeding and dairy farming, arable farming). In addition, there are now some local small-scale businesses, especially in the wood processing sector. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Pierrefontaine-les-Varans to Avoudrey . Another road connection exists with Domprel.
