geography

Lac de Saint-Point , left Saint-Point-Lac

Saint-Point-Lac is located at 859  m above sea level, about eleven kilometers south-southwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the Haut-Doubs, on a slightly elevated position on the west bank of the Lac de Saint-Point , at the foot of the ridge of the Bois du Chablay.

The area of the 4.52 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The eastern border runs along the mostly flat bank of Lac de Saint-Point and extends south to the confluence of the Doubs in the area of a flat, moored valley floor. From the lakeshore, the community area extends westward over the slope of Saint-Point-Lac to the adjacent, predominantly wooded ridge ( Bois du Lac and Bois du Chablay ). On this wide ridge, at 981 m, the highest point of Saint-Point-Lac is reached.

Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Point-Lac are Les Grangettes in the north, Montperreux and Malbuisson in the east, Labergement-Sainte-Marie in the south and Malpas in the west.

history

The origin of the village goes back to a Benedictine priory founded in the 12th century. The monks made the area arable and thus laid the foundation for settlement. Together with Franche-Comté , Saint-Point came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. To avoid confusion with other towns of the same name, Saint-Point was officially renamed Saint-Point-Lac in 1923. Today Saint-Point-Lac is a member of the Lacs et Montagnes du Haut-Doubs municipal association .

With 281 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Saint-Point-Lac is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range of around 90 people, a striking population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s thanks to the attractive residential area.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Saint-Point-Lac was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture, in particular dairy and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses, including a cheese dairy and retail shops. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

As a resort in a popular excursion area in the High Jura, Saint-Point-Lac today also benefits from tourism. The municipality is mainly geared towards summer tourism and has a boat harbor, a campsite and various opportunities for water sports.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that runs along the left bank of the Lac de Saint-Point. Another road connection is with Malpas.
