Germéfontaine is a French municipality with 122 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Germéfontaine is located 679 m above sea level, 16 kilometers south-southeast of Baume-les-Dames and about 34 kilometers east of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the high plateau of Villers east of the Orsans basin.
The area of the 11.16 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The western part of the area is occupied by the Villers plateau, which is 670 m on average. It consists mainly of arable and meadow land, but also shows smaller forest areas and boggy areas. The high plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The southern boundary is the 773 m high rocky ridge in the Bois de la Côte . To the east the terrain rises gradually up to the ridge of the Bois de Volienne . Here, at 821 m, the highest elevation of Germéfontaine is reached. To the southeast, the municipal area extends to the edge of the Pierrefontaine plateau (700 m).
Neighboring communities of Germéfontaine are Villers-la-Combe and Landresse in the north, Pierrefontaine-les-Varans in the east, Domprel in the south and Villers-Chief in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Germéfontaine belonged to the Passavant estate, which had belonged to the lords of Montbéliard since the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Germéfontaine is a member of the Portes du Haut-Doubs municipal association .
On January 1, 2009, the arrondissement membership of the municipality was changed. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.
Attractions
The fountain from the 19th century and the Calvaire from the 16th century are worth seeing . On the outskirts there is a small chapel from the 19th century. Germéfontaine does not have its own church; the village is parish after Villers-la-Combe.

With 122 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Germéfontaine is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (304 people were still counted in 1891), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Germéfontaine was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) well into the 20th century. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Orsans to Pierrefontaine-les-Varans. Further road connections exist with Villers-la-Combe and Domprel.
