Laval-le-Prieuré is a French commune with a population of 35 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Laval-le-Prieuré is located at 568 m , eight kilometers southeast of Pierrefontaine-les-Varans and about 40 kilometers south-southwest of the city of Montbéliard (beeline). The village extends in the Jura , in the deeply cut valley of the Dessoubre , on a terrace above the mouth of the Pissoux stream, below the high plateau of Mont-de-Laval.
The area of the 5.29 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the Dessoubre valley, which is sunk more than 300 m deep into the Jura plateau. The Dessoubre flows from south to north and sinks deeper and deeper into the limestone layers. From the east it takes up the short side stream Pissoux, which has also created a deep erosion valley. The valley is flanked on both sides by steep, mostly wooded slopes (Bois de Tennes), which are criss-crossed by ledges in various places. At the top they are crowned by the rocks of a resistant limestone layer. The border mostly runs above the steep slopes on the edge of the high plateau. At 820 m, the highest point in Laval-le-Prieuré is reached on the Mont-de-Laval plateau.
The hamlets also belong to Laval-le-Prieuré:
- Le Bas-de-Laval ( 496 m ) on the Dessoubre
- Les Bercots ( 562 m ) on a terrace on the western slope of the Dessoubre valley
- Les Cerneux ( 605 m ) on a terrace on the eastern slope of the Dessoubre valley
Neighboring municipalities of Laval-le-Prieuré are Plaimbois-du-Miroir in the north and east, Mont-de-Laval and Consolation-Maisonnettes in the south and Guyans-Vennes in the west.
history
The Laval Priory has been under the monastery of Montbenoît since the 12th century . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. To avoid confusion with other parishes of the same name, Laval was officially renamed Laval-le-Prieuré in 1922.
Attractions
The former priory church originally dates from the 12th century, but was restored and redesigned in the 15th century, so that the structure today shows the Gothic style. The Saint-Sulpice church has a rich interior, most of which date from the 15th and 16th centuries.

With 35 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Laval-le-Prieuré is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. The population continued to decline throughout the 20th century (163 people were still counted in 1901).
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Laval-le-Prieuré was a village dominated by agriculture (cattle and dairy farming, some arable and fruit growing). In the past, the water power of the Dessoubre was used to operate mills and sawmills. A sawmill still exists today. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Saint-Hippolyte through the Dessoubre Valley to Orchamps-Vennes . There are other road connections with Le Luhier and Plaimbois-du-Miroir.
