Chaux-lès-Passavant is a French municipality with 133 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Chaux-lès-Passavant is 540 m above sea level, ten kilometers north of Valdahon and about 25 kilometers east of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the northern edge of the plateaus of Valdahon and Vercel, the so-called first plateau of the Jura, south of the valley section of the Audeux and west of the ridge of Belmont.
The area of the 8.44 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the low relief high plateau of Valdahon, which averages 540 m. It forms a wide hollow that rises slightly to the south and is flanked by a ridge in the west and east. The plateau is made up of arable and meadow land. It has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. At 639 m, the highest point in Chaux-lès-Passavant is reached at the height of Belmont. To the north, the plateau drops with a steep slope crowned by rock walls to the erosion valley des Audeux and includes the valley widening of Grâce-Dieu.
Neighboring municipalities of Chaux-lès-Passavant are Aïssey in the north, Orsans in the east, Belmont and Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp in the south and Magny-Châtelard in the west.
history
In a valley widening of the Audeux, the lords of Montfaucon founded the Cistercian monastery La Grâce-Dieu in 1139, which was the spiritual center of the region until the French Revolution . During the occupation by Duke Bernhard von Sachsen-Weimar in the Thirty Years War , the ice cave (La Glacière) served as a place of refuge for the monks and villagers. During the revolution, the Trappists settled in La Grâce-Dieu, then the Trappists in Besançon. Chaux-lès-Passavant has been a member of the Portes du Haut-Doubs municipal association since 1998 .
On January 1, 2009, the arrondissement membership of the municipality was changed. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.
Attractions
The monastery church originally dates from the 13th century, but was later restored and redesigned several times, including in the 18th and 19th centuries. It has a Gothic portal. The monastery buildings were erected in the 18th century. Around 500 minerals from all over the world are on display in the Maison des Minéraux. The village church in Chaux-lès-Passavant also dates from the 18th century. Natural attractions include the Audeux valley with its waterfall and the 66 m deep ice cave (Grotte de la Glacière).

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Chaux-lès-Passavant was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now various local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Gonsans to Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp. Another road connection is with Orsans.
