geography

Étalans is located at 589  m above sea level, six kilometers west of Valdahon and about 21 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the middle of the wide plateau of Valdahon, the so-called first plateau of the Jura, in the headwaters of the Ruisseau de la Brême, northeast of the Loue valley system .

The area of the 40.91 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is taken up by the very low relief high plateau of Valdahon, which is on average 600 m. It is partly made up of arable land and meadows, partly also of forest and rises slightly towards the southeast. In the extreme southeast, on the hill near Oupans, the highest elevation of Étalans is reached at 638 m. To the south of the village rises the Ruisseau de la Brême , which flows through a valley, slightly deepened into the plateau, to the west and feeds its water to the Loue. Otherwise, the plateau has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.

In the northern and northeastern parts of the municipality, larger forests extend, including the Bois d'Emblery and the Forêt de la Verrière-du-Grosbois . In the far north, the area extends almost to the foot of the Côte d'Anroz ridge . In the north-east the community area has a share of around 3 km² in the Valdahon military training area, which takes up a total of 35 km².

In addition to the actual village, Étalans includes various hamlets and individual farms, which are scattered far across the plateau:

  • Bermotte ( 599  m ) on the plateau north of the village
  • L'Ejus ( 590  m ) in a hollow northeast of the village
  • Oupans ( 615  m ) on a slope slightly to the west southeast of the village

Neighboring municipalities of Étalans are Naisey-les-Granges , Gonsans , Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp and Valdahon in the north, Fallerans in the east, Guyans-Durnes in the south and Saules , Guyans-Durnes, Ornans , Tarcenay-Foucherans , Trépot and L ' Hôpital-du-Grosbois to the west.

Attractions

The Saint-Nicolas church was built in the 13th century and then underwent numerous minor and major changes. The characteristic portal area in Gothic style has been preserved from the time it was built . The bell tower was rebuilt in 1705; The side aisles also date from the 18th century, while the present choir was renovated in 1834. The church has a remarkable gilded wooden statue of the Virgin and Child (from the 18th century). Only a few foundation walls of the former castle from the 13th century are visible. Various farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.

Economy and Infrastructure

Etalans train station

Until well into the 20th century, Étalans was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some small businesses, including businesses in the construction industry, wood processing, mechanical workshops, car garages, a cheese dairy and retail stores. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area or in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the main road N57, which leads from Besançon to Pontarlier . At Étalans there is the junction of the main road D461 via Valdahon and Morteau to La Chaux-de-Fonds . The village is relieved of through traffic by a bypass. Other road connections exist with Ornans , Baume-les-Dames and Durnes . Étalans has a train station on the railway line from Besançon to Le Locle .
