Chaux-Neuve is a French municipality with 318 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chaux-Neuve is located at 991  m above sea level, about 31 kilometers southwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the wide longitudinal basin of the Val de Mouthe on the Cébriot , between the heights of the Haute Joux in the north-west and the Risoux in the south, near the border with Switzerland .

The area of the 28.31 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The landscape is characterized by parallel ridges and longitudinal hollows, which are oriented in the southwest-northeast direction according to the direction of the fold of the Jura in this region. The central part of the area is taken up by a two-kilometer-wide longitudinal basin, which forms a synclinory in geological and tectonic terms . The area is drained by the Cébriot to the northeast to the Doubs . In the area of Chaux-Neuve the Mulde has several moor areas and individual moor ponds.

On its north-west side, the longitudinal basin of Chaux-Neuve is flanked by the predominantly wooded heights of the Haute Joux. In the Bois de la Côte de la Haute Joux , a northeastern branch of the Croz Mont , an altitude of 1202 m is reached. To the south, the municipality extends over the northeastern foothills of Mont Noir (up to 1190 m) into the impassable, densely wooded area of the Risoux, in which hilltops and karst hollows alternate. There are no surface rivers here because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. At 1384 m, the highest point in Chaux-Neuve is reached on a hilltop of the Grand Risoux. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual village, Chaux-Neuve also includes several hamlets and numerous individual farms, including:

  • Le Lernier ( 1006  m ) in a valley south of the village
  • Le Cernois ( 1114  m ) in a valley between Mont Noir and Risoux

Neighboring municipalities of Chaux-Neuve are Chapelle-des-Bois in the south, Châtelblanc in the west, Arsure-Arsurette and Le Crouzet in the north, Petite-Chaux and Mouthe in the east and the Swiss municipality of Le Chenit in the southeast.

history

The area, which was uninhabited until the 13th century, belonged to the Abbot of Saint-Claude . From this the lords of Chalon-Arlay received it as a fief and had the castle of Châtelblanc built. In the 14th century, Chaux-Neuve was granted certain freedoms to promote settlement in the area. Chaux-Neuve now belonged to the Kastlanei Châtelblanc. It had been a church since the middle of the 15th century, while Châtelblanc formed the center with the castle. In 1516 the area was divided between the two communities. Together with Franche-Comté , Chaux-Neuve came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Chaux-Neuve is a member of the Lacs et Montagnes du Haut-Doubs municipal association .

With 318 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Chaux-Neuve is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had declined markedly in the first half of the 20th century (527 people were counted in 1886), slight population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chaux-Neuve was primarily a village characterized by agriculture, in particular dairy and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In the past, peat was cut in the bog areas. In addition, there are now some local small businesses, including mechanical workshops. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

As a resort in a popular excursion area in the High Jura, Chaux-Neuve now also benefits from tourism. The community is geared towards both summer tourism (hiking, cycling) and winter tourism (skiing). Chaux-Neuve has a ski jump, a ski lift, cross-country ski trails and a park for polar dogs. Chaux-Neuve is a regular venue for a Nordic Combined World Cup .

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on the D437 departmental road, which leads from Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux to Pontarlier. Further road connections exist with Le Crouzet and via Chapelle-des-Bois with Morez .
