Fuans is a French municipality with 483 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Fuans is located at 715 m above sea level, nine kilometers north of Morteau and about 44 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The street village extends in the Jura , on the southern edge of the Vennes basin, at the foot of the Bois de la Faye forest.
The area of the 11.10 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The northern part of the area is occupied by the Vennes Basin, which has a width of about 4 km and a length of almost 10 km and averages 770 m. It is mostly made up of arable and meadow land. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The dry valley of Fuans, which topographically belongs to the catchment area of the Dessoubre, is sunk into the basin .
To the south, the municipal area extends over the forest slope of the Bois de la Faye to the adjoining Jura plateaus of La Faye and Les Cerisiers (943 m) with only weak relief, which show a loose structure of coniferous forest and pastureland. In the far south, on the hill of Percerot, the highest elevation of Fuans is reached at 1023 m.
In addition to the actual location, Fuans also includes various farms and numerous individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Fuans are Guyans-Vennes in the north, Le Bélieu in the east and Fournets-Luisans in the south and west.
history
Since 1998 Fuans has been a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays de Pierrefontaine-Vercel, which comprises 44 localities . On January 1, 2009, the arrondissement membership of the municipality was changed. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.
Attractions
The village church Nativité-de-Saint-Jean-Baptiste (Birth of John the Baptist) was built in the 19th century in neo -Gothic style and has a pulpit from the 17th century. The Notre-Dame du Mont chapel also dates from the 19th century. The Belvédère de la Roche du Prêtre (outside the municipality) offers a beautiful view of the Cirque de Consolation basin with the karst spring of the Dessoubre.

Economy and Infrastructure
Until the 20th century, Fuans was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (cattle and dairy farming, arable farming) and forestry. In addition, there are now various small-scale businesses, including a construction company. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road D461, which leads from Besançon to Morteau. Further road connections exist with Orchamps-Vennes, Pierrefontaine-les-Varans and Les Fournets.
