Mairie Oye-et-Pallet

Oye-et-Pallet is a French municipality with 726 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Oye-et-Pallet is 860  m above sea level, about six kilometers south-southwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the Haut-Doubs, slightly elevated on the northern slope of the Doubs valley , at the southern foot of the Montagne du Laveron , north of the Lac de Saint-Point .

The area of the 10.45 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Doubs valley, which has a flat valley floor that is a maximum of one kilometer wide. The Doubs meanders through this wide valley and drains the area to the northeast. The valley is flanked in the north by the plateau of the Montagne du Laveron (up to 1011 m), in the south-east by the height of Crossart ( 1005  m ). In the west, the community soil extends into the longitudinal hollow of Malpas. To the south, the municipality extends to the banks of the Lac de Saint-Point in the area of the outflow of the Doubs. A narrow strip extends southeast over the height of the Bois Noir (at 1037 m the highest elevation of Oye-et-Pallet) into the narrow valley of the Fontaine Ronde , which follows an important fault line crossing the Jura.

In addition to the two districts of Oye and Pallet, which have grown together today, the hamlets of Friard ( 900  m ) in the hollow of Malpas at the southern foot of Laveron and Les Granges Tavernier ( 929  m ) on the ridge northeast of Lac de Saint-Point also belong to the Local community. Neighboring municipalities of Oye-et-Pallet are Granges-Narboz in the north, La Cluse-et-Mijoux in the east, Montperreux and Les Grangettes in the south and Malpas and La Planée in the west.

history

Parish Church of Saint-Nicolas

Oye is mentioned for the first time in writing in a document from the monastery of Mont-Sainte-Marie in 1296. The place name Oye originally goes back to a Celtic word and means water , while Pallet is probably derived from the Latin word palus (swamp). Oye and Pallet have belonged to the Joux rule since the Middle Ages. Together with Franche-Comté , both villages came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since the time of the French Revolution , Oye and Pallet formed a double community.

In the 18th century iron was mined in the municipality, which was smelted in the Pontarlier blast furnace. With the opening of the tram that ran from Pontarlier via Mouthe to Foncine-le-Haut , Oye-et-Pallet was connected to public transport in 1900. However, the line was stopped after the Second World War . Today Oye-et-Pallet is a member of the Lacs et Montagnes du Haut-Doubs municipal association .

With 726 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Oye-et-Pallet is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range of around 350 people, there has been significant population growth since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Oye-et-Pallet was primarily a village characterized by agriculture, in particular dairy farming and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. The water power of the Doubs has been used to operate mills and sawmills since the 19th century. Today there are some local small businesses, including in the construction and wood processing industries. In the meantime the village has also turned into a residential community; numerous houses serve as second homes. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the D437 departmental road from Pontarlier to Mouthe . Further road connections exist with La Planée, Malpas and Saint-Point-Lac .
