Mairie Foncine-le-Haut

Foncine-le-Haut is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Foncine-le-Haut is at 860  m , about 16 kilometers southeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in an open valley basin at the mouth of the Brideau in the Saine , between the forest heights of Haute Joux in the north and Mont Noir in the south.

The area of the 28.95 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The landscape is characterized by ridges and longitudinal hollows, which are oriented towards the southwest-northeast according to the direction of the fold of the Jura in this region. The central part of the area is taken up by the 2.5 km wide longitudinal basin of the Saine, which geologically forms a syncline . The Saine rises north of the village in a rock circus at the foot of Croz Mont . In the valley basin of Foncine-le-Haut, it takes up the Brideau from the east and then flows through an open valley to the south-west.

This longitudinal hollow is flanked in the south by the forest height of Mont Noir (up to 1201  m ). To the northwest, the community area extends over the steep slope of the Côte du Bayard to the densely wooded plateau of the Croz , which is part of the Haute Joux chain system . The karst features , such as cart fields and sinkholes, are characteristic of the plateau . At 1206  m , the highest elevation of Foncine-le-Haut is reached on Croz Mont . This ridge drops steeply with a rock face to the partially muddy Combe of Entre Côtes . The north-western border lies on the ridges of the Forêt de la Haute Joux ( 1150  m ). In the west, the communal soil extends to the edge of the Saine valley in the area of Les Planches-en-Montagne. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual village, Foncine-le-Haut also includes numerous hamlets, farm groups and individual farms, including:

  • Le Bas de la Ville ( 890  m ) in the basin of the Saine
  • La Chevry ( 844  m ) on the Saine
  • Les Ruines ( 948  m ) on a plateau at the southern foot of the Côte du Bayard
  • Sous le Bayard ( 930  m ) on a plateau at the southern foot of the Côte du Bayard
  • Gros Voisiney ( 900  m ) on a hill east of the valley basin of Foncine-le-Haut
  • Les Petetins ( 950  m ) on the slope south of the Foncine-le-Haut basin
  • Sur la Côte ( 958  m ) on a plateau south of the Saine valley
  • Sous le Mont Noir ( 1008  m ) on a ledge at the north foot of Mont Noir
  • Le Voisiney-Sauvonet ( 899  m ) on a hill east of the Foncine-le-Bas basin

Neighboring municipalities of Foncine-le-Haut are Les Chalesmes , Bief-des-Maisons and Arsure-Arsurette in the north, Châtelblanc in the east, Chapelle-des-Bois in the south and Foncine-le-Bas and Les Planches-en-Montagne in the west.

history

Litter finds indicate that the municipality of Foncine-le-Haut was already populated in prehistoric times ( menhir of La Chevrerie) and during Roman times. The place name Foncine, which is first mentioned in the 13th century, developed over the centuries from the original fond de la Saine (valley floor of the Saine). Foncine-le-Haut has been part of the Château-Vilain estate since the Middle Ages. It formed a barony therein and was granted certain freedoms in the 14th and 15th centuries. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1790 Foncine-le-Haut became an independent municipality after the subdivision of the large municipality of Foncine.

Attractions

The parish church of Foncine-le-Haut was built in the 16th century and remodeled in the 17th century. The chapel of Les Ruines dates from the 18th century; also the chapel Saint-Joseph from the 17th century should be mentioned. One of the natural attractions is the karst spring of the Saine north of the village.

With 1,063 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Foncine-le-Haut is one of the smaller communities in the Jura department. After the population had declined markedly in the first half of the 20th century (1230 people were still counted in 1881), a significant increase in population has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Foncine-le-Haut was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. As early as the 17th century, businesses that were dependent on water power, such as mills, sawmills and tanneries, settled along the Saine. Over time, these businesses were supplemented by cheese factories, blacksmiths and watch workshops. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses, including companies in plastics processing, micromechanics and apparatus engineering.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on the main road D437, which leads from Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux to Pontarlier . The operation of an electric tram that connected Foncine-le-Haut with Champagnole was discontinued in 1950 and replaced by a bus line.
