Ney is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Ney is located at 530 m , about two kilometers west-southwest of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the Champagnole plain, south of the Ain , at the northern foot of a prominent mountain promontory (Bénédégand) that leads to the Champagnole plateau.
The area of the 7.26 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The northern border always runs along the Ain, which flows here with a winding course from east to west. The river runs in a valley that is sunk around 30 to 40 m into the Champagnole plain. From the course of the river, the community area extends south to the plain, which is an average of 530 m. This is flanked by a densely wooded steep slope, which is crowned at its upper edge by a ledge and leads to the high plateau of Champagnole. The 1 km wide and 2 km long basin south of the village, in which the Bief de la Reculée rises, also belongs to the municipality. The municipal boundary mostly runs above the steep slope. At 719 m , the highest point of Ney is reached on the Bénédégand , a narrow ledge that separates the basin from the valley of the Ain in the east.
Neighboring communities of Ney are Champagnole in the north, Cize in the east, Loulle in the south and Mont-sur-Monnet and Monnet-la-Ville in the west.
history
The village was first mentioned in the 11th century under the name of Cognosh . Over time, the place name changed to Ney.
Attractions
The village church of Ney was built in the 18th century and has a remarkable altar from the 17th century. There is a chapel on the flank rising to the Bénédégand above the village.

With 574 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Ney is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range of around 250 people, a significant increase in population was recorded, especially during the 1960s and 70s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has remained almost constant.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Ney was a predominantly agricultural village. In addition, there are now some small and medium-sized businesses, including a large printing company and a furniture factory. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, mainly in Champagnole.
The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road D471, which goes from Champagnole to Pont-du-Navoy and on to Lons-le-Saunier . Other road connections exist with Cize, Loulle and Mont-sur-Monnet.
