Montigny-sur-l'Ain is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

Montigny-sur-l'Ain is 490 m above sea level. M., about 18 kilometers east of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The clustered village extends in the Jura , in the valley of the Combe d'Ain, in the middle of the wide Ain valley between the ridge of the heute in the west and the high plateau of Champagnole in the east.

The area of ​​the 7.99 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The western part of the area is taken up by the wide valley of the Ain, which on average is 480 m above sea level. history

Various finds indicate that the municipality of Montigny-sur-l'Ain was already inhabited during the Gallo-Roman period. The place name is derived from the Gallo-Roman surname Montan (i) us and means something like Landgut des Montan (i) us (Montaniacum). In the Middle Ages, Montigny-sur-l'Ain belonged to the vice-county of Monnet, whose castle was on a promontory over the Combe d'Ain. It was built in 1480 on the orders of King Louis XI. destroyed. The former village church no longer exists either. Together with Franche-Comté , Montigny-sur-l'Ain came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The ruins of the former Château de Monnet have been preserved: the foundation walls of the keep and of round towers as well as moats.

With 199 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Montigny-sur-l'Ain is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (246 people were counted in 1891), a slight increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Montigny-sur-l'Ain was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Pont-du-Navoy through the Ain valley to Doucier . Another road connection is with Monnet-la-Ville.
