Fraroz is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Fraroz is located at 948 m , about 14 km east of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on an extensive plateau between the source of the Ain or the Val de Mièges and the Jura chain of the Haute Joux.
The area of the 6.22 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is occupied by a plateau, which is on average 920 m . It shows only very small differences in relief and is mainly covered by meadow and pasture land, in the southern part also by forest. This high plateau shows no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In some hollows, which are sealed by layers of marl and clay , raised bogs and individual bog ponds could develop. To the south, the community area extends with a narrow tip over a steep slope, partly criss-crossed by rock walls, to the densely wooded heights of the Haute Joux . On this Jura chain the highest point of Fraroz is reached with 1222 m .
Neighboring communities of Fraroz are Rix and La Latette in the north, Cerniébaud in the east, Le Crouzet in the south and Arsure-Arsurette and Billecul in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages Fraroz belonged to the Nozeroy rule . The village was granted certain freedoms in the 14th century to promote the settlement of the area. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The village church of Fraroz was built in the 18th century and has an octagonal choir and a remarkable altarpiece from the time it was built.

With 49 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Fraroz is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had declined markedly in the first half of the 20th century (151 people were still counted in 1891), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Fraroz was mainly a village characterized by agriculture, in particular dairy farming and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are no jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Bief-des-Maisons to Mignovillard . Further road connections exist with Cerniébaud and Billecul.
