Saugeot is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Saugeot is located at 676  m , about 23 km east-southeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on the high plateau of Champagnole between the Combe d'Ain in the west and the chains of the High Jura in the east, north of the valley of the Sirène brook.

The area of the 4.49 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Saugeot plateau, which is 680  m on average . The gently undulating plateau slopes gently towards the west. It is drained west to the Ain by the Sirène brook, which forms an open valley south of Saugeot . To the north-east of the village there is a 40 m high step that leads to another plateau. Saugeot's highest elevation is reached here at 755  m . The whole area shows a loose structure of meadow and pasture land or forest. In the north, the border always runs on the upper edge of the slope that slopes steeply to the Hérisson valley.

Saugeot includes the hamlet of Le Puits ( 640  m ) on the plateau north of the Sirène Valley as well as a few individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Saugeot are Menétrux-en-Joux in the north, Bonlieu in the east and south and Uxelles and Denezières in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, the Saugeot area belonged to the property of the Carthusian monastery of Bonlieu. The hydropower of the Sirène was used early on to operate a mill and a fulling mill. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1823 when the previously independent Le Puits was incorporated into Saugeot.

With 66 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saugeot is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased significantly in the 20th century (191 people were still counted in 1886), stagnation has been recorded in recent years.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saugeot was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , especially cattle breeding and dairy farming, as well as forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road N78, which leads from Lons-le-Saunier to Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux . Other road connections exist with Uxelles and Denezières.

Others

The Turkish national soccer player Mevlüt Erdinç spent his youth here. In his youth he played for FC Saugeot.
