Cerniébaud is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Cerniébaud is located at 982 m , about 15 km east of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on an extensive plateau between the source of the Ain or the Val de Mièges and the Jura chain of the Haute Joux.
The area of the 10.53 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is occupied by a plateau, which averages 980 m . It shows only very small differences in relief and is mainly covered by meadow and pasture land, in the southern part mostly by forest. This high plateau shows various karst phenomena such as sinkholes , drainless depressions, carts and caves. It has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the southeast, the community area extends over a steep slope, partly crossed by rock walls, to the densely wooded height of the Forêt du Prince . On the Saint-Sorlin , which belongs to the Jura chain of the Haute Joux , the highest point of Cerniébaud is reached at 1237 m .
Cerniébaud includes the Combe Simon settlement ( 975 m ) on the plateau at the northern foot of the Saint-Sorlin and a few individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Cerniébaud are La Latette in the north, Mignovillard in the east, Les Pontets , Reculfoz and Le Crouzet in the south and Fraroz in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Cerniébaud belonged to the Nozeroy domain . The place name means something like surrounded by forest . The village was granted certain freedoms in the 14th century to promote the settlement of the area. Together with Franche-Comté , Cerniébaud came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 88 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Cerniébaud is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (177 people were counted in 1891), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Cerniébaud was primarily a village characterized by agriculture, especially dairy farming and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
In winter, Cerniébaud benefits from tourism when cross-country skiing can be practiced on the high plateau.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Fraroz to Mignovillard. Further road connections exist with Nozeroy and Mouthe .
