Uxelles is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Uxelles is located at 598  m , about 20 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on a hill south of the Sirène brook on the Champagnole plateau between the Combe d'Ain in the west and the chains of the High Jura in the east.

The area of the 5.27 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is located on the Champagnole plateau, the average altitude of which is 600  m . This plateau is slightly wavy, with the highest elevation of Uxelles being reached at 686  m on a knoll southeast of the village. It shows a loose structure of meadow and pasture land or forest. The plateau is drained by the Sirène and the side stream Ronay, which flows below Uxelles, to the west to the Ain .

Neighboring communities of Uxelles are Charcier and Denezières in the north, Saugeot and Bonlieu in the east, Cogna in the south and Vertamboz and Charézier in the west.

history

Traces of a Roman road indicate an early inspection (and possibly settlement) of the municipality area. The Uxelles area was cleared and reclaimed in the 12th century. Since the Middle Ages, the village has belonged to the barony of Saint-Sorlin (near Charézier). Together with Franche-Comté , Uxelles came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The Saint-Jean-de-la-Porte-Latine chapel in Uxelles was built in the 17th century.

With 55 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Uxelles is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the number of inhabitants had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (131 people were still counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Uxelles was a village dominated by agriculture , especially cattle breeding and dairy farming. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. Road connections exist to Clairvaux-les-Lacs , Vertamboz, Denezières and Saugeot.
