Saint-Maurice-Crillat is a French municipality with 242 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Saint-Maurice-Crillat is located at 760  m , about 25 km east-southeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a plateau sloping gently to the west east of the Ain valley, at the foot of the chains of the High Jura with the Forêt de Prénovel.

The area of the 20.79 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The western part of the area is occupied by the plateau of Saint-Maurice, which averages 750  m, is slightly inclined to the west and has only slight differences in relief. This plateau is limited in the southwest by the deeply cut valley of the Drouvenant , with the municipality boundary mostly running above the steep slope. In the north of Saint-Maurice a ridge juts out to the west on the plateau. To the north is the valley of the Ronay , a tributary of the Sirène . The brook forms the northern border of the municipality.

While the plateau of Saint-Maurice shows a loose structure of meadows, arable land and little forest, in the eastern part there are extensive and partly impassable forest areas. These include the Forêt de la Crochère in the south of the village and Forêt de Prénovel , Bois de Trémontagne and Bois des Mouillères in the east. They cover a wide ridge, which is oriented in the south-south-west-north-north-east direction according to the strike direction of the Folded Jura in this area. At 1135  m , the highest point in Saint-Maurice-Crillat is reached on the ridge of the Bois des Mouillères.

The dual municipality of Saint-Maurice-Crillat consists of the following villages:

  • Saint-Maurice ( 760  m ) on the plateau
  • Crillat ( 7670  m ) on the edge of the plateau east of the Drouvenant valley
  • Trétu ( 750  m ) north of the ridge of Saint-Maurice above the Ronay valley

Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Maurice-Crillat are Bonlieu in the north, La Chaux-du-Dombief and Saint-Pierre in the east, Grande-Rivière Château , Nanchez and Châtel-de-Joux in the south and La Frasnée and Cogna in the west.

history

Until 1298, Saint-Maurice belonged to the dominions of Clairvaux and Crillat, after which it formed its own dominion with Crillat. In the early 14th century, Saint-Maurice was granted certain freedoms. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

During the French Revolution , the place was called Mont Fleury . The area and other names were changed in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1822 the previously independent Trétu was incorporated into Saint-Maurice. To avoid confusion with other communes of the same name, Saint-Maurice was officially renamed Saint-Maurice-en-Montagne in 1938. When the merger with Crillat was completed in 1972, the new municipality was given the double name of Saint-Maurice-Crillat.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Maurice was rebuilt in the 17th century in Gothic styles. It has rich furnishings from the time it was built. The ruins of a keep from the 16th century have been preserved. In Crillat there is a chapel and the remains of the medieval castle from the 13th century.

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (402 people were still counted in 1881), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Maurice-Crillat was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , particularly cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road N78, which leads from Lons-le-Saunier to Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux . Other road connections exist with La Frasnée and Prénovel.
