Clairvaux-les-Lacs is a municipality in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . Until 2015, it was the capital of the canton of Clairvaux-les-Lacs in the Lons-le-Saunier arrondissement .

geography

Clairvaux-les-Lacs is at 541  m , about 19 kilometers southeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (beeline). The town extends in the Jura , on a plateau between the valley of the Ain in the west and the wooded chains of the High Jura in the east, north of the Lacs de Clairvaux above the valley of the Drouvenant .

The area of the 12.29 km² municipal area includes a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the gently undulating landscape of the plateau east of the Ain. The two lakes Grand Lac and Petit Lac are sunk into a wide basin at 527  m . They are bordered by bog areas in various places and drained to the north. The northern boundary runs in the area of the Drouvenant , which flows in a narrow valley about 40 m deeper into the surroundings to the west to the Ain. The community area extends in a narrow strip to the southeast over the slowly rising and densely forested high plateau of the Forêt de la Joux . Here, at 826  m, Clairvaux-les-Lacs' highest point is reached.

In addition to the actual village, Clairvaux-les-Lacs also includes several hamlets and individual farms, including:

  • Soyria ( 525  m ) on the plateau east of Lac de Vouglans
  • Le Langard ( 550  m ) in the valley east of the Petit Lac at the foot of the Forêt de la Joux

Neighboring communities of Clairvaux-les-Lacs are Vertamboz and Cogna in the north, La Frasnée , Hautecour and Châtel-de-Joux in the east, Soucia in the south and Barésia-sur-l'Ain and Boissia in the west.

history

The area around Clairvaux-les-Lacs can look back on a very long tradition of settlement. During excavations, the remains of a Neolithic bank settlement on the northern edge of the Grand Lac were discovered, which was inhabited about 4000 years before Christ. There was also a settlement here during the Bronze Age . The tumuli near the hamlet of Soyria also date from the Bronze Age .

Clairvaux-les-Lacs was first mentioned in a document in 1089 under the name Clara Vallis , which means a bright, clear valley . The existence of a priory has been documented since the early 12th century, which was probably at the beginning of the settlement development. It was secularized in 1766. Since the Middle Ages, Clairvaux has been the center of a barony that later became a marquisate. The town of Clairvaux was fortified in the 13th century and was granted freedom rights by the local noble family. The Carmelite monastery was founded in the 15th century. Together with Franche-Comté , Clairvaux came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. To avoid confusion with other localities of the same name, Clairvaux was officially renamed Clairvaux-les-Lacs in 1930. There was a change of area in 1959 when the previously independent Soyria was incorporated into Clairvaux-les-Lacs.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Nithier originally dates from the 12th century, but was later redesigned several times. It has remarkable interiors, including the richly carved 15th century choir stalls brought here from Baume-les-Messieurs Abbey , a crucifixion group from the 16th century, wall paintings and goldsmithing. Also worth seeing are the Notre-Dame de l'Isle (14th century) and Saint-Roch (15th century) chapels. The latter is in the cemetery.

Clairvaux-les-Lacs is characterized by a picturesque townscape. The two parallel streets of the old town center are lined with town houses from the 17th to 19th centuries. At the northern end of the town is the 12th century round tower, the only remnant of the former manor house.

With 1,451 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Clairvaux-les-Lacs is one of the smaller communities in the Jura department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range of around 1000 people, a significant increase in population was recorded, especially during the 1950s. A longer period of stagnation was followed by slow but continuous growth from around 1990.

Economy and Infrastructure

Clairvaux-les-Lacs was for a long time a town dominated by agriculture and retail trade. In the 19th century, various businesses that were dependent on water power settled in the Drouvenant valley, namely flour mills, a paper mill and several blacksmiths. Today Clairvaux-les-Lacs performs central functions for the surrounding area of the Ain valley. It is the location of various small and medium-sized businesses and retail businesses. The main industries represented in Clairvaux-les-Lacs include woodworking, mechanical workshops, eyewear and construction.

As a resort in a popular excursion area in the western Jura, Clairvaux-les-Lacs now also benefits from tourism. In the summer months there are numerous opportunities to practice leisure and water sports at Grand Lac. There are three campsites on the lake shore.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N78, which leads from Lons-le-Saunier to Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux . Further regional road connections exist with Moirans-en-Montagne , Saint-Lupicin and Pont-du-Navoy .
