Chaux-des-Crotenay is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chaux-des-Crotenay is located at 771  m , about ten kilometers south-southeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on a slope inclined slightly to the south on the plateau between the valleys of Lemme in the west and Saine in the east.

The area of the 11.67 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is taken up by the plateau of Chaux-des-Crotenay (up to 801  m ), which shows a loose structure of meadow and farmland as well as forest. The northern continuation of this plateau forms the densely wooded hilltop landscape of the Bois de Derrière Cornu ( 822  m ). The high plateau is bounded in the east by the deeply carved erosion valley of the Saine (the eastern municipal border runs along the course of the river) and in the west by the valley of the Lemme. This flows alternately through wide valleys and narrow, deep ravines accompanied by rock faces. In the far north-west is the impressive Cascade de la Billaude waterfall . A small part of the municipal area lies west of the Lemme valley.

To the south of the Chaux-des-Crotenay plateau there is an above-ground, no-drain, longitudinal trough, which in turn is surmounted by the ridges of Rachet , Col du Gyps and Les Epinois . At 859  m , the highest point in Chaux-des-Crotenay is reached on a ridge of Les Epinois. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual village, Chaux-des-Crotenay also includes several hamlets, groups of farms and individual farms, including:

  • Le Pont de la Chaux ( 717  m ) in a valley widening west of the Lemme
  • Tépette ( 713  m ) in a valley widening east of the Lemme
  • Cornu ( 746  m ) on the plateau on the southern edge of the Bois de Derrière Cornu

Neighboring municipalities of Chaux-des-Crotenay are Syam in the north, Les Planches-en-Montagne in the east, Entre-deux-Monts in the south and Châtelneuf and Le Vaudioux in the west.

Chaux-des-Crotenay: train station

The church of Chaux-des-Crotenay was first mentioned in a document as early as 855 under the name Krotonacum . In the Middle Ages, Chaux-des-Crotenay became the center of a barony that was established after the division of Montrivel. The first castle was built in the 11th century, later modified and destroyed in the 17th century on the orders of Louis XIV . Together with Franche-Comté , Chaux-des-Crotenay came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The current parish church of Chaux-des-Crotenay was built in the 15th century on the site of a previous building and shows Gothic styles; the bell tower was built in the 19th century. The church is richly decorated , including various statues from the 15th and 16th centuries.

An 18th century chapel is in the hamlet of Cornu.

On the hill to the southwest of the village are the ruins of the medieval castle, which originally dates from the 11th century but was rebuilt in the 13th and 14th centuries.

With 404 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Chaux-des-Crotenay is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (552 people were counted in 1891), it has remained at an almost constant level since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Chaux-des-Crotenay was primarily a village characterized by agriculture and forestry. In the 18th century, businesses that were dependent on water power, such as mills, sawmills and tanneries, settled in Le Pont de la Chaux an der Lemme. Today there are some small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road N5, which runs from Champagnole to Morez . Other road connections exist with Les Planches-en-Montagne, Entre-deux-Monts, Le Frasnois and Châtelneuf. Chaux-des-Crotenay has a train station (near the hamlet of Le Pont de la Chaux) on the railway line from Champagnole to Morez, which opened in 1900.
